Doomtown: Reloaded – Wrting in the Weird, Weird West!

Well I’ve certainly been remiss in updating my blog for a long time. I’m still writing quite a bit, more than ever truth be told. Around November last year my first fiction piece came out for the card game Doomtown: Reloaded. For those that don’t know, Doomtown is an expandable card game where you build your own decks, competing against other opponents for victory. It’s similar in style to Magic: The Gathering or Legend of the Five Rings but has the great point to it — you don’t buy packs hoping to get certain chase cards, all the cards are right there for you to play. The game is the most strategic game I’ve ever played outside of Chess or Go, and the coolest parts of it all is that it’s Western and that combat is poker based.

I could go on for days about the game and mechanics, but here’s what it has to do with my writing. The game has a continuing story line that evolves with each expansion. Flash fiction, short stories are released online and with the rule books. The card names and lines of flavor text at the bottom, as well as the art depicted advance a story line and let players in on the world for those playing close attention.

It’s a fascinating story line filled with wild west action, creepy horror elements and some steampunk-esque gadgetry. I’m honored to be a part of it. A lot of the story can be gleaned from reading the web fictions without playing the game for those interested in reading, but the game offers such a nice interactive dynamic as well, especially when you’re familiar with the story. I highly recommend playing.

The full storyline is being archived here by an awesome player out of France:

The stories are pretty short, and there’s several. It’s a good time to get caught up if you’re interested in the world.

Most pieces are fairly self-contained. Some knowledge of the world and setting helps but if you imagine a weird American west, you can get the gist pretty easily. Most are self-contained. So if you just want to check out my work thus far, I have easy links below as well:

Have fun. Time to saddle up and get back to writin’!
