A Brief Moment of Memory

December 6, 2016 by Jon Del Arroz Leave a Comment

Posted this to Facebook a few moments ago, but I want Kiyomi to be thought of and prayed for in more places than just social media:

The loss of Kiyomi Tanouye in the fire last weekend hit so many of us profoundly. I haven’t spoken about it much because of the shock, and I haven’t known what to say, or how best to honor my friend.

She was so light-hearted, fun, funny. I stole so many of her lines because she had so much quick wit to her it was incredible. Without her, I wouldn’t have had one of the most wonderful college experiences someone could have, simply by being around her so much and seeing her infectious energy.

She truly cared about people, and about art and music. A fierce advocate for local and independent artists of all stripes, which is invaluable these days, with it being so hard to cut through all of the media noise. I admired that so much, and love much of the same art that she did.

I wish I could say hello just one more time, see what cool things she’s found or is up to.

The only thing I can determine to do that would be a worthy gesture is to honor her through my art. As a gesture to memorialize her, I’m going to be changing the name of my main protagonist in my current novel — a studious, quick witted, steadfast woman in her own right — to Kiyomi so that her name will be remembered in print.

I miss you Jennypop.

What a beautiful way to remember her. I’m so sorry for your loss. Kiyomi sounds like an amazing person.
