I know it’s almost a tired topic at this point, but I’m reading Gail Simone’s statement about how she’s not going to work for Dynamite Comics anymore and thinking about the whole association blame game.
Now I don’t feel bad at all for Ethan Van Sciver nor his crew who are bilking money off of people for “outrage” while they can’t even produce comics for real, but at the same time this whole culture has become absurd garbage to one wonders why so many artists and writers allowed a system with a few corporations at the top controlling everything and giving pittance for paychecks while they posture intellectual properties for movies.
How can anyone be creative in a system like that? How can anyone truly write anything inspiring?
The answer is: they can’t. There’s a culture of fear everywhere. A culture of you’ll be guilty and unhirable if you even talk to the wrong person, and you can’t make great art under that kind of fear.
There’s only one reasonable way forward for an industry to be healthy again, and that’s an independent revolution like the kind I’ve been fostering by making MONTHLY comics that actually compete. I just got another great review for RoboToad yesterday. Anyone who actually is into comics and loves them sees that we’ve got a real alternative here.
It’s too bad most youtubers won’t talk about my books because they’re afraid of getting “guilt by association’d” and destroyed by the same people who are crying they’re getting blacklisted.
