Over the last two days I’ve sampled some of the best eateries in Nashville, here trying to find the best fried chicken rather than the best brisket like in Texas. First took me to one of the oldest Hot Chicken outlets in the city (probably the 2nd made):
Boltons was a little building here with a walk up order counter and a few outdoor seats. It’s in a little bit of a sketchy area but a lot of history here for this eatery.
I didn’t take a picture of the chicken til after I’d been eating it, forgot:
This wins for “hottest chicken”. The medium spice even was so hot it was painful to the taste buds, I can’t even imagine what the full-hot plate would be like. If you want spice, this is your place.
Next was Hattie B’s, a commercialized chain which is famous for their chicken. There was a line out the door here:
The chicken here was a little better/more moist than the first, but the sides were very much not as good, too much salt all around. It was fine, the spice on the “medium” was very mild and I’m not a guy who’s into that spicy. It was good, but not great because of the aforementioned sides.
Morning 2 I hit Biscuit Love, one of the most famous places in Nashville for their biscuits and gravy.
I got their “east nasty” which has fried chicken on a biscuit with a fried egg. It was a heart attack on a plate but extremely tasty. Amazing stuff. Definitely worth coming to if you’re in Nashville. There will be long lines out the door, so give yourself 15-20 to be seated.
Finally, for lunch we hit another BBQ place:
The Peg Leg Porker is a family-owned restaurant in the gulch, a little hole in the wall type of building again. However, this was 100% the best chicken I had. It was so moist, brined to perfection, the bbq rub on here was incredible. Their pulled pork was even better. I suppose it’s a little different as it’s the only non fried chicken on the list, but at the same time, the food here from the sides to their “fried pie” desert were so much better than everything else, one has to eat here. It’s 10/10 perfection.
It’s a different vibe than Texas barbecue here but it is wonderful stuff. Enjoy your meals!
