This week’s news was that Marvel is ditching Diamond for Penguin-Random house. If you’re a follower around here you know the book business is in as dire straights as the comic business is. While it appears to be on more solid ground than the shaky model of comic shops and their sole distributor, books in trad-land are down to four major publishers who operate their own distribution.
It used to be the big 5 or the big 6 so everything is continuing to spiral as these companies try to force people into liking product because of brand, rather than listening to customers for what they want for their products.
It’s a bizarre setup, but this is what monopolies and oligopolies do. The comic shop model isn’t going to last the 2020s decade at this rate, despite the gimmicks being used to prop it up.
Good thing there’s already an alternative working hard for you.
