Mark Millar supported a retailer who went viral with a video about comic industry dying because of its identity politics problems. Since then, he’s been taking heat from other comic professionals, including Mags Visaggio, a trans writer working on Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon comic adaptation.
Glenn, the owner of The Comic Book Palace, went viral with a clip from one of his long-form videos about comics earlier this week, where he complains about Marvel and DC Comics writers making self-inserts rather than writing beloved characters in a true and correct fashion. He implored writers to care for the characters, implying it hurt his sales because of their poor quality in recent years.
Several comic book pros attacked Glenn, including Donny Cates and Jamal Igle. Still, Mark Millar immediately went to his defense, making several tweets about the topic, culminating in, “I was so appalled at the way a comic retailer was being harassed and bullied by a digital mob this week just for saying comic-books are going in the wrong direction I had to talk to him.”
Millar then hosted Glenn on his YouTube channel to discuss the comic book industry, why it’s dying, and what could be done to fix it. Glenn offered intelligent, constructive criticism, which Millar echoed.
Many comic book professionals, however, don’t like problems in the comic industry being discussed openly. They don’t want civil discussions about poor sales and closing comic shops because a lot of the problems exist because of their insertion of heavy-handed, hard-left political topics into their work. Because of this, they view any constructive criticism of books as a personal attack against their political beliefs.
Even though Millar has stated several times he’s a socialist, it doesn’t save him from being ostracized as “other” by the mob of failing comic professionals trying to score clout.
Daniel Kalban, a struggling writer who struggles to get 200 readers on his Kickstarter books, took to X to attack Millar. Pop Culture expert Kneon from ClownfishTV noted they’re “Voldemorting” Mark Millar by not even stating his name when attacking. Kablan accuses Millar of playing to “far-right culture warriors” by discussing what needs to be done to help comic book sales, amplifying that any discussion of mainstream comics immediately turns political.
It’s a bizarre tactic for a fledgling writer to attack someone like Mark Millar, who has a track record of selling amazingly well. It would be better for him to learn from Millar’s craft and see if he can up his game to get to where the Scottish writer is.
The same goes for Mags Visaggio, who decided to attack Millar’s writing as a virtue-signaling response to the rest of the dying comic industry. Mark Millar literally ripped it off with Space Bandits,” he said, referring to Millar’s work as similar to that of Brian’s admittedly bad book. “Weird if its an unreadable book nobody liked.”
Mags Visaggio has recently taken to X to beg for money for rent on Cash App, signifying that his business prowess in comics is not anywhere near Millar, who has a deal with Netflix to produce several of his upcoming projects from Millarworld.
Comic professionals continue to sow seeds of bitterness and jealousy, attacking those who might be able to help them out of the rut they’re in instead of listening. This is even in the wake of the comic industry dying.
