Speaking this week at the ‘TheWrap’s Power Women Summit’, Carolyn Strauss, executive producer of the TV series The Last of Us, said that female Hollywood producers refuse to film wherever killing unborn babies is illegal: “Where we choose to shoot is not just about bringing money or spending money in Georgia or wherever, it’s about ‘can you take care of the crew?’” Strauss added: “You have to think about the health and safety of your crew… I won’t shoot in those states.”

One has to question the wisdom of letting a butch lesbian speak on behalf of straight women. That should qualify as mansplaining. It is not as if she’d be at risk of getting pregnant.
Since Roe v Wade was overturned in 2022, it is now illegal in some USA states for doctors to perform abortions after six weeks or after the first detection of a heartbeat in the fetus. This had feminist harpies up in arms.
These strict state laws have exceptions to allow abortions after six weeks in case of medical emergencies, but that didn’t stop Strauss from implying that banning the killing of unborn babies after six weeks is a health and safety risk. Strauss’ fake concern is a prime example of manufactured outrage.
Compounding the manufactured outrage, Aida Rodgers, executive producer of the comedy series Barry, said, “I think it’s your obligation. If you’re going to hire women, you have to make sure that you’re careful in the place that you’re filming.” So stunning and brave.
Producers Guild of America CEO Susan Sprung commented on the absolute horror of states outlawing the killing of unborn babies in some states in the USA: “It’s just hard to believe we even have to think about it.”
They would happily take your money, though. Note that none of these female Hollywood producers said anything about withholding their shows from states where killing unborn babies is illegal, which does make one doubt their commitment to the cause.
There is an obvious explanation for this apparent lack of commitment, though, and it is more than just a lust for money. Predominantly conservative states are exactly where they want their subversive messages to be spread.
And it is not even a secret anymore. At the same round-table, show-runner, co-creator, and writer of the TV series Swarm Janine Nabers said, “I’m always going to want to do subversive provocative stories. That’s just who I am.”
