A new film company, Angel Studios, has turned large profits with recent films, including His Only Son, The Sound of Freedom, and The Shift. Their focus has been on films with positive messages, faith, and wholesomeness. Their success at the box office with these films shows that a studio doesn’t need Hollywood’s degeneracy to succeed.
Angel Studios hit the ground running back in March with their release of the film His Only Son. This film, about the testing of Abraham by God in the Book of Genesis, chapter 22, went on to make 12.4 million dollars at the box office on a budget of only $250,000.
Next, Angel Studios released The Sound of Freedom on the Fourth of July. This film, based on the true story of a Homeland Security agent who traveled to South America to rescue children being trafficked for the sex slave trade, was a massive success, going on to gross 249.1 million dollars worldwide on a budget of just over fourteen million.
Now, in early December, Angel Studios has released The Shift. With a budget of only 6.4 million dollars, this science fiction movie has already made 8.5 million at the box office and has earned two million more due to merchandise based on the film, specifically an empty tomb necklace featured in the film, which the protagonist gives his wife. The Shift is a science fiction retelling of the story of Job from the Bible. It features a protagonist named Kevin, who is ‘shifted’ to an alternate dystopian Earth ruled by a being known as ‘The Benefactor,’ who is actually the devil. He promises to return Kevin to his wife and give him money and power if he will serve him.
The film continues to follow Kevin as he is tested for his faith and tries to find a way back to his world. Nowadays, with most movies promoting messages more in line with triumphing through one’s own actions or ingenuity, it’s refreshing to many viewers to see a film that shows the power of faith. Standing for principles in adversity rather than the message to ‘Follow Your Heart.’
The recent offerings from Angel Studios show a massive audience for faith-based movies, and it’s possible to make such movies profitable. Meanwhile, movies that rely on degeneracy, gross-out humor, or woke politics are getting figuratively body-slammed at the box office. Magic Mike: The Last Dance barely made back its budget of 45 million dollars, while Renfield made only 26.7 million, with a budget of 65 million dollars. The Marvels is also underperforming, earning only 198 million worldwide on a budget of 274.8 million dollars.
With 2024 on the horizon, producers and investors will increasingly consider groups like Angel Studios for their profit margins as big-budget film flopping becomes the norm.
