Mark Millar keeps taking on the comics whisper network on X, giving warnings on the state of the comic book industry and proposing solutions. Fans have met all his ideas with positive discussion, but industry insiders have attacked him instead. During the discussion, Millar coined the term “cancel pigs” as a rhetorical killshot against these clout-chasing industry goons who try to hurt anyone’s career who disagrees with them. Now, cancel pigs is trending.
Last week, comic book store owner Glenn O’Leary, made a viral rant about the state of the comics industry. In typical fashion for woke industry insiders like Donny Cates, they initiated an online harassment mob to attack O’Leary. Yes, you read that right – the industry insiders won’t even acknowledge the possibility that something’s rotten in Denmark. Instead, their solution is to shut down any criticism of their industry. Mark Millar took exception to this, which led to his cancelation.

Millar describes Cancel Pigs as: “Twitter packs like the people who mobbed retailer Glenn O’Leary last week, mocking him and trying to destroy his reputation. We’ve seen it happen with comic pros too like Howard Chaykin & many others. Entirely for sport. The Cancel Pig exists to destroy because he cannot CREATE.”

Earlier, when Millar acknowledged a tweet from Ethan Van Sciver, he gave the mob, or Cancel Pigs as Millar calls them, an excuse to go after Millar, attempting to associate him with #ComicsGate.
Millar was quick to point out that he’s not part of #CG: “Oh, and nice try to the Cancel Pigs trying to frame me as a Comicsgate guy so they can use their typical line of attack. I don’t believe in ANY factions. I’m my own man and I believe in GOOD COMICS.”

Millar is certainly not wrong. Fans want good comics. There are far too many creators focused on pushing a woke agenda, instead of focusing on creating good comics.
That goes for freelancers, too. This week, Millar cautioned the online Cancel Pigs mob on Twitter (X): “Some genuine career advice for any wannabe Cancel Pigs – A huge part of freelance life is your peers/ editors wanting to work with you. Everyone just wants to enjoy their job and have fun. If you’re toxic nobody wants to TOUCH you and many of you are in this place now. You are absolutely not going to get Writer X’s job on Batman if you spend 6 months harassing him into suicide. You will only be remembered by his editor and peers as someone who tried to bankrupt their pal & they will never be there for you. Here endeth the lesson!”
Let us hope, for the sake of sanity and good comics, that freelancers take Millar’s advice. Instead engaging in online mob attacks to gain favor with certain industry insiders, comic creators should focus on creating good comics.
