Mark Waid Threatens To “Burn Down” The Comic Industry In Tantrum Over Mark Millar

DC Comics writer Mark Waid has been embattled since he targeted YouTuber Diversity & Comics to get his book Jawbreakers: Lost Souls canceled by Antarctic Press, resulting in a tortious interference lawsuit that Richard C. Meyer eventually settled. Waid became the original cancel pig at that moment, and now he’s going after Mark Millar and others, calling out the bad behavior of comic industry pros.

Mark Millar has come under fire from leftist comic pros since he amplified the video of retailer Glenn O’Leary, who complained that the poor quality coming from modern writers and artists was killing the sales of his comic shop. The video went viral, and several professionals attacked the retailer rather than listening to his criticism. Mark Millar stepped in to interview O’Leary to help him get his voice heard.

During this crisis in comics, Millar coined the term “cancel pigs” to call out the woke professionals and shills in comics who try to cancel any creator or fan who steps outside the narrative. Cancel Pigs trended on X over the last couple of days, shaking industry professionals like Mark Waid, who apparently feel the term hits too close to home for their behavior online.

Mark Waid went on an unhinged rant on Facebook and BlueSky social last evening, first reported by Bleeding Fool. In the tirade, Waid calls Millar a “former comics superstar whose heat is fading,” illustrating his jealousy for Millar, who’s had his entire catalog of creator-owned properties bought by Netflix under the imprint Millarworld. Netflix has already made multiple of his properties into streaming TV shows, something Waid hasn’t accomplished with his IPs.

One of Waid’s fans went further, lambasting Millar as a “douche.”

He further attacked comic retailers and fans who are concerned about the state of comments with a passive-aggressive reply on Facebook, saying, “Sigh. All this complaint about how “comics are dying” because familiar characters are being written “out of character” by people who want to “self-insert” their political causes or turn them into “SJW mouthpieces”…but not one single legitimate example given. Not one. Who? Superman? Batman? Green Lantern? Flash? Wonder Woman? Spider-Man? Captain America? Daredevil? Iron Man? Nightwing? Harley Quinn? Damian Wayne? Seriously, what am I missing here? Have these complainers read a single Marvel or DC comic in the 2020s?”

The rants continued in comments for over a thousand words, making many comic fans wonder if Waid’s jealousy of Millar’s success and internal guilt about being a part of the comic industry’s collapse is consuming him.

In the most shocking statement yet, Waid said he’d “burn the industry down” rather than share any space with those he politically disagrees with. He strawmans people like Mark Millar, Ethan Van Sciver, and others who critique the bad stories being produced by Marvel and DC Comics as “alt-right” to do so, a term not used by any normal people since the media made “alt-right” meaningless in 2017.
Waid is demonstrating behavior exactly like Millar calls out as cancel pigs. He’s trying his hardest to end Mark Millar’s career, but Millar has transcended the normal comic industry into something much greater, leaving Waid proverbially pissing into the wind.

This kind of behavior in comics needs to stop, and we need to learn to try to build comics through great stories without cringy leftist politics being vomited on every page like Waid and his cronies have done over the last decade.

It’s already burned to the ground. All that’s left is to piss on the ashes.

Not one single example huh Mark? How about Tim Sheridan’s recent Green Lantern that he used as a political mouthpiece and went online begging for people to buy his book to beat the chuds… I really doubt Mark Waid has read any of the recent books from his most recent employer DC.

Comics aren’t dying, lefties? Tell that to my local comic shop (the only one within a one hour drive) which is going out of business this month…
