True to form, Hollywood is on track to deliver another bust with The American Society of Magical Negroes scheduled for release on 22 March 2024. The movie’s official trailer received a proper trashing from YouTube viewers, so much so that the Dislike count has been disabled as of writing this. The last count was 63K down votes, with the current Likes at a meagre 4.8K.
A short synopsis over at IGN describes The American Society of Magical Negroes as “…a fresh, satirical comedy about a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people’s lives easier.”
The trailer can be summarised as: A magical black man joins a society of black people who are saving black people by…. saving white man from own his inherent racism. So stunning and brave.

To paraphrase one of the “gems” from official trailer of The American Society of Magical Negroes: “What’s the most dangerous animal on the planet. White people when they feel uncomfortable …White people when they feel uncomfortable precedes a lot of bad stuff for us.”
Obviously there is the obligatory race mixing too. To be fair, there are some funny moments in the trailer, and the movie could have been a fun romantic comedy if only the scriptwriters stuck to romance and comedy, instead of writing a bad parody of an anti-white sermon. What ruins the movie though is the overall premise.
If the trailer is anything to go by, this movie will be one giant exercise in psychological projection, with the projection being deliberately banal. In fact, it is so banal that one could be forgiven for believing that the movie is part of some elaborate right-wing conspiracy to make black people look ridiculous. Seriously, what is Hollywood up to? Are they trying to make black people hate white people AND make them hate themselves in equal measures?
The comments on the trailer on YouTube are telling:
“You know what I like about this film. It’s bringing blacks and whites together. We can all agree that it’s a collective “no” for all sides.”
“As a black American man let me just say how disappointed I am that YouTube removed the dislike button”
“I love how the message of the movie is : COMPLETELY AND SOLELY judge a person based on their SKIN COLOR!”
Judging by the trailer’s viewer reactions, there will not be any magic in Hollywood’s latest cringe fest, but the billion dollar question is: “Should white people be allowed to call the movie The American Society of Magical Negroes, or do they have to call it The American Society of Magical N-Word People?”
