German director Moritz Mohr obviously didn’t get the Hollywood memo and instead produced a zany testosterone laden action movie. No strong independent heroine to steal the show and no existential lamentations from the hero. And that just may be the reason distributors aren’t interested – too much testosterone and too little go grrrl power.

Boy Kills World premiered at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival in September this year, where it was received with critical acclaim, and achieved a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 75%. Despite its favourable initial reception no distributor has struck a deal as of yet to release Boy Kills World in the cinemas.
Boy Kills World is star studded, starring Bill Skarsgård, Yayan Ruhian and Famke Janssen among others. IMDB describes Boy Kills World as “A dystopian fever dream action film that follows Boy, a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, he is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.
Simon Swart, the CEO of one of the production partners Nthibah Pictures, said of Boy Kills World: “Boy Kills World is set in a distinct dystopian world, combining real world themes with a stylized look that is fresh, cool and original, borrowing from the best of graphic novels. With a script that combines wild innovative action sequences, a sense of humour and a lot of crazy, this film has the potential to be a worldwide hit and potential franchise property.”
The action scenes in the leaked trailer are indeed crazy, and well executed considering there was no CGI involved. Swart’s description is spot-on, some of the fighting scenes could have been lifted straight out of a graphic novel page. It should also be noted that Boy Kills World is definitely not suitable for children. It is R-rated for graphic violence and there are a lot of F-bombs. Apparently there are sexual references, but no sex scenes or nudity.
The movie has even spawned an upcoming video game called Super Dragon Punch Force 3 developed by South African game developers Talent Digital Art. The upcoming release of the fighting game, Super Dragon Punch Force 3, was born of a fictional arcade game in the movie called Super Dragon Punch Force 2.
It may well be a shame if Boy Kills World is never released, it certainly looks to have the makings of achieving cult status, and with a critics score on Rotten Tomatoes of 75%, it cannot do worse at the box office than most movies Disney has put out lately. Boy from Boy Kills World could well be the next superhero fans want.

There are other ways to get films out into the market. Eff the Gatekeepers. Put it out on YouTube for $10-$20 view or sell it digitally on Amazon. Obviously there are other platforms as well. The Parallel Economy exists for a reason. The creators need to stop playing by Hollyweird’s rules.
