In Mark Millar’s now famous interview with big comics retailers, Millar made the astute observation that Hollywood needs creators and that screenwriters can’t “come up with anything”. In an interview during 2021, Snyder said of the yet-to-be-produced Rebel Moon: “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”
Now that Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire has been released, Snyder’s stated hope of Rebel Moon becoming a massive IP should be revisited.
With one-star critic reviews like “Like the Death Star obliterating planets, Zack Snyder is out to topple countless innocent genres” from Johnny Oleksinski from the New York Post and Rotten Tomatoes article headlines like “REBEL MOON: A CHILD OF FIRE FIRST REVIEWS: THIS ISN’T THE SCI-FI EPIC YOU’RE LOOKING FOR” and an overall Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 24%, Snyder’s hopes of Rebel Moon becoming a massive IP may have just been dashed.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, although a visual feast for the eyes, fails to establish that unique mythology that is necessary to garner a cult following like Star Wars or Star Trek did. One can certainly blame wokeness for the lack of compelling characters. Casting a skinny boy with boobs who has the inexplicable power of ten oxen in wiry arms alone was never going to make for a compelling heroine.
Male and female viewers alike will be disgusted by a man (a farmer no less, aren’t farmers supposed to be strong?) who had to have his “honour defended” by a girl, when some pig-human hybrid species wanted to ass-rape him. No doubt Snyder thinks he was being super-edgy and hip, but Kora and Gunnar aren’t going to be memorable and loved characters like Princess Leia, Han Solo, Captain Kirk or Spock.
The movie’s lukewarm reception may indicate the kind indifference from sci-fi fans towards Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon IP that will likely leave his hopes dashed.
Will Snyder blame Rebel Moon’s lacklustre performance on “sci-fi fatigue” like he blames Marvel and DC box-office failures on “superhero fatigue”? It is more likely to be wokeness-fatigue.
But Snyder’s dashed hopes brings us back to Millar’s astute observation in his interview with the three big retailers. Millar was right, screenwriters can’t come up with anything. In Rebel Moon‘s case Snyder couldn’t come up with a compelling IP.
