The new Rey solo Star Wars film starring Daisy Ridley, which was set to explore the post-Skywalker saga and the rebuilding of the Jedi Order, is now rumored to face an indefinite delay. The cause? Alleged creative differences between acclaimed screenwriter Steven Knight and Lucasfilm, leaving the project in a state of uncertainty which is said to be causing “indefinite delays.”
The news broke through a rumor shared by Jason Ward at Making Star Wars, who revealed that Steven Knight, initially chosen to pen the script for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s New Jedi Order film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, has yet to complete his work. Ward stated, “Today, I was told that Knight hasn’t written, hasn’t got to get to it. The scheduling, the stars did not align. Steven Knight was simply the person that if they picked up, who they could get in that moment and then it never lined up.”
While Ward emphasized that Steven Knight’s status on the project remains unclear, he hinted at potential outcomes, saying, “But if you wanted my opinion on it, I think Knight writing that movie is it’s either been moved to give Knight the opportunity to write it or it’s going to be a different writer.”
This revelation follows a series of setbacks for the film, including the departure of Damon Lindelof, who was initially reported to be working on the project. Lindelof cited the high degree of difficulty as a reason for stepping away, emphasizing that if the film couldn’t be great, it shouldn’t exist.
The uncertainty surrounding the script’s completion has fueled speculation that Steven Knight might exit the project altogether. The delay adds another layer of complexity to a film already plagued by development issues. Even before its official announcement at Star Wars Celebration, rumors circulated about Damon Lindelof’s involvement, suggesting that the challenges associated with the film were evident from the early stages.
The New Jedi Order film was expected to be the first Star Wars production since The Rise of Skywalker, featuring Daisy Ridley, but recent developments have thrown that timeline into disarray. The rumored departure of Steven Knight and the creative roadblocks faced by the project could potentially reshape the entire production.
According to That Park Place, another report suggests that Disney executives are apprehensive about the film’s success, drawing parallels with the underwhelming performance of The Marvels. The concerns stem from a fear that the Star Wars brand may be perceived as damaged, contributing to the urgency to move the project into full-scale production.
Further complicating matters, World of Reel’s Jordan Ruimy reported that Disney has decided to delay the film “indefinitely” due to a lack of confidence in the New Jedi Order’s immediate prospects. The reported problems extend beyond creative differences and indicate a fundamental lack of certainty about the film’s direction.
As the Star Wars community eagerly anticipated a fresh exploration of the galaxy far, far away, this unexpected delay casts a shadow over the future of the franchise. Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey, intended to breathe new life into the Star Wars universe, is now clouded with uncertainty and speculation. Whether the film will eventually see the light of day, who will helm its script, and how it will be received by audiences remain open questions in this unfolding Star Wars saga.
