The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes actress and avid Star Wars enthusiast, Rachel Zegler, has expressed her desire to voice the character Shara Bey in the Star Wars franchise. Shara Bey, a skilled pilot and rebel fighter, is known as Poe Dameron’s mother and played a crucial role in the Battle of Endor, according to Wookiepedia. Zegler, recognized for her role as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, showcased her enthusiasm for the Star Wars universe in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
At just 22 years old, Rachel Zegler humorously revealed her aspiration to voice Shara Bey in a cartoon adaptation of the character. She cited the reason for her interest—Shara Bey pilots an RZ-1, a ship whose initials align with Rachel Zegler’s own. However, beyond the playful connection, Zegler’s deep appreciation for the character, drawn from her fandom of the Star Wars comics, adds a layer of genuine passion to her desire.
On X, Rachel Zegler posted, “as a fan of the comics i would like to throw my hat in the ring to voice shara bey, mother of poe dameron, because her ship was an RZ-1 (my initials!) for green squadron.”
Shara Bey, initially introduced in Star Wars: Shattered Empire, is depicted as a valiant fighter who, along with her husband Sergeant Kes Dameron, joined the Rebellion due to the Empire’s corruption. Notably, she participated in the Battle of Endor, contributing as a fighter pilot and later continued her service by actively pursuing the Imperial remnant for the New Republic. Shara Bey’s influence extended beyond her military contributions; she played a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of her son, Poe Dameron, teaching him to fly and inspiring his involvement in the Resistance.
Rachel Zegler’s suggestion that she would be an excellent fit for the role stems not only from what appears to be some deep Star Wars lore knowledge. The Star Wars comics are pretty obscure as all things go, so even knowing who the character is comes at a surprise to many reading the actress’s tweets.
Star Wars has been under fire from fans lately with the revelation of the Rey solo film’s director going off the rails with feminist rants, and as well as her ties to the global world economic order.
While Rachel Zegler’s proposal may have started in a lighthearted manner, Kathleen Kennedy’s “put a chick in it and make it lame and gay” version of Star Wars make for a very real possibility for the actress to portray Shara Bey. Since she claims she is a Star Wars fan, Rachel Zegler could get the chance to prove what she says is something beyond a marketing stunt. Whether Lucasfilm considers her offer remains to be seen, but Rachel Zegler as a casting choice would be par for the course given the upcoming Jedi Order film. For fans of Star Wars, it surely couldn’t get worse?
