In the ongoing feud between the Critics Choice Association (CCA) and the Hollywood Creative Alliance (HCA) the CCA has bared its nails after being bitch-slapped by the Hollywood Creative Alliance. The CCA took decisive action to sever ties between its own members and the HCA. This development was communicated to CCA members via email, asserting that dual membership in both organisations was no longer permissible due to alleged attempts by the HCA to influence Critics Choice Awards voting.
According to an email obtained by TheWrap, the Critics Choice Association claimed to possess evidence suggesting that a representative from the Hollywood Creative Alliance had improperly conveyed to at least one studio, and possibly more, that it could sway the outcome of Critics Choice Awards voting. While the CCA dismissed the HCA’s purported threat as empty, it deemed the allegations serious enough to warrant action. The CCA further pointed to “voting irregularities” within the HCA’s recent history, which the HCA itself had admitted to, along with additional evidence suggesting that the HCA’s awards voting process could be unduly influenced.

Responding to these allegations, the Hollywood Creative Alliance issued its own statement, vehemently denying any attempts to manipulate awards votes. The HCA clarified that, during communications with studios, networks, and representatives, it had simply highlighted the opportunity for talent to participate in HCA ceremonies during a crucial awards voting period. This clarification sought to distance the HCA from any implication of impropriety while emphasising the potential benefits of talent engagement during key voting periods.
The rift between the two organisations goes beyond accusations of undue influence. Last year, the Hollywood Creative Alliance underwent a name change from the Hollywood Critics Association amidst allegations of racial bias. The resignation of the organisation’s board president, Nikki Fowler, further fuelled the controversy as she accused the founder, Scott Menzel, of racial bias and creating a hostile work environment. These allegations cast a shadow on the HCA’s reputation, prompting the organisation to re-brand itself.
In response to the Critics Choice Association’s move to ban members from dual participation, the Hollywood Critics Association criticised the decision as unfair and unethical. The HCA argued that members should have the right to belong to as many organisations as they choose, and that such memberships celebrate individual accomplishments. In a subtle dig at the CCA’s ethics, the HCA expressed its commitment to seeing nominated and honoured talent winning multiple awards throughout the awards season and beyond.
This clash between the Critics Choice Association and Hollywood Critics Association exposes the underlying tensions between the two organisations and highlights the revolution always eats itself. Woke tears all over, it is a beautiful thing.
