It has been confirmed that The X-Files star Gillian Anderson is set to star alongside Jared Leto as Tron: Ares commenced filming in January. The filming for the highly anticipated movie Tron: Ares has recently commenced. Joachim Rønning, known for his work on Kon-Tiki and directing Disney movies Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, is at the helm. The cast includes Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. The script is penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, while Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer, and Leto are on board as producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.
Director Joachim Rønning took to Instagram to announce the completion of the first week of production of Tron: Ares with Gillian Anderson and Jared Leto, which originally began in mid-August 2023 but faced delays due to strikes. The setbacks, described by Rønning as “extremely frustrating,” led to the indefinite layoff of 150 crew members until negotiations were resolved between Hollywood directors and the AMPTP in mid-June.

Tron: Ares now confirmed to star Gillian Anderson too, also referred to as Tr3n in its logo, has a long history of development. Plans for a third Tron movie date back to 2010, and in 2015, Joseph Kosinski was confirmed as the director with Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde reprising their roles. However, Disney cancelled Tron 3, and the project remained in a “cryogenic freeze” until 2020 when Disney decided to revive it, appointing Joachim Rønning as the director. Originally expected in 2025, the release date is uncertain due to the five-month production delay.
While character details remain under wraps, Tron: Ares with Gillian Anderson and Jared Leto is not a direct sequel to the cult classics Tron and TRON: Legacy but draws inspiration from the deleted Tron 3 script. Jared Leto plays Ares, a character integral to the original script, embarking on a journey from the digital world to the human realm in an AI-centric plot.
Tron‘s narrative explores interactions between morally good and corrupt computer programs. The franchise gained praise for its groundbreaking visuals in the first Tron and continued the legacy with stunning light cycle battles, a memorable score by Daft Punk, and Oscar-nominated sound editing in Tron: Legacy. Now it has also been confirmed by Deadline that, Gillian Anderson, the double Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress fondly remembered as agent Dana Scully from The X-Files, will join the cast of Tron: Ares, contributing her talent to an already stellar ensemble. Starring alongside Jared Leto, details about her character and the film’s plot remain tightly under wraps.
