Tom Holland initially swung into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the amiable, neighbourhood wall-crawler Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War. Subsequently, he graced the screens in Infinity War and Endgame, carving his path toward becoming a prominent figure in the MCU. His journey extended beyond ensemble films, with a trilogy of standalone movies: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home.
In No Way Home, Holland’s Spider-Man embarked on a multiverse odyssey, collaborating with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s iterations of the iconic superhero. This cosmic escapade unfolded against the backdrop of a lineup of villains from Spider-Man’s past, featuring adversaries like the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, and Lizard. The film interwove elements of multiverses introducing a live-action Spider-Verse. The last movie gave Spider-Man a clean slate in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing closure to his initial trilogy, which served as an origin story for the MCU’s Peter Parker.
The question that looms large now is the trajectory of Spider-Man‘s future within the MCU. Initially slated for a potential release on July 12, 2024, a sequel seemed imminent. However, the writers’ and actors’ strike has cast a shadow of uncertainty, likely pushing the project’s release to 2025, sandwiched between Captain America 4 and the Thunderbolts movie.
Anticipated as a blend of street-level and Avengers-level threats, the sequel may see Spider-Man grappling with a localised crisis before confronting a larger menace. Rumours suggest that the storyline might delve into the aftermath of Daredevil: Born Again, aligning Spider-Man with street-level heroes. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed Spider-Man‘s role in leading the MCU’s street-level heroes, sharing the spotlight with Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, portrayed by Charlie Cox. The role of the Disney+ Daredevil series in shaping the film’s narrative remains speculative, with details yet to unfold. The symbiote suit, a tantalising prospect, may not make its appearance until Phase 7, post the culmination of the Multiverse Saga.
A recent rumour swirling online posits a creative divergence between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios regarding the tone of the next Spider-Man film. Marvel Studio’s head, Kevin Feige, and star Tom Holland purportedly advocate for a more grounded story following the multiverse spectacle of No Way Home. On the contrary, Sony Pictures leans towards a grander multiverse extravaganza, contemplating the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for an encore.
