Calvin Broadus, AKA “Snoop Dogg,” has just released a new film, “The Underdoggs,” available to stream on Amazon Prime. The new release, which is currently trending to the top of the streaming platform, has been overshadowed by comments Snoop made in an interview about former president Donald Trump. In recent years, Snoop has made an effort to capitalize off his gangster rap fame with a variety of entertainment endeavors.
In a recent interview with The Times, Snoop was asked about his feelings regarding the 2024 presidential candidate and former president.
“Donald Trump? He ain’t done nothing wrong to me. He has done only great things for me. He pardoned Michael Harris.” -The Times
Harris, who helped launch Snoop’s career as a founding member of the “Death Row” records label, was given a pardon by President Trump for drug offenses. It appears Snoop has forgiven Trump after making a music video appearing to shoot at a likeness of Trump with a toy gun in a YouTube video.

These comments started a flurry of online discussions about Snoop but overshadowed the new film with political discourse. Snoop has been steadily rebranding his image by appearing with Martha Stewart and launching a children’s YouTube channel, “Doggyland”. Despite the film starring a youth football team in Long Beach, California, it’s anything but family-friendly. With adult language and violent themes, “The Underdoggs” was given an “R” rating and is recommended for mature audiences.
In the film, Snoop Dogg portrays former football player “Jaycen Jenning” who is sentenced to community service and court-ordered to coach a youth football team. The rebellious youngsters learn teamwork as Snoop’s character evolves from a self-centered millionaire into a responsible adult. While this may not be for everyone, it adds a different take on sports coaching comedies.
Snoop has always been a master of marketing, appearing in ’22 and ’23 as a playable character in multiple “Call of Duty” video games. He seems to always find a way to top the charts whether in music or streaming video. It’s likely he courts controversy and invokes the former president as a larger marketing strategy to get people talking. With the intense competition in subscription streaming services, even a superstar like Snoop can have difficulty standing out in the crowd. One thing is for sure: start mentioning Trump, and everyone pays attention.
