Last night, Sony announced an enhanced Until Dawn port for PS5 and PC from developer Ballistic Moon. This news raises questions about why Until Dawn’s original developer, Supermassive Games, has yet to make a sequel to the popular survival horror game.
New information reveals Supermassive did consider a Until Dawn sequel that eventually evolved into 2022’s The Quarry. In 2022 interviews with 6 former Supermassive employees on the studio’s work culture, some mentioned The Quarry began as a pitch for Until Dawn 2.
One employee remarked: “The Quarry team was originally Until Dawn 2 working with Sony. And Sony basically paid for them to be making this for them as a prototype. Then once the prototype was done, Supermassive turned around and said, ‘We’re going to shop this around and see if anyone else wants it”, which was kind of the final nail in the coffin of any relationship with Sony. They ended up getting picked up by Google who funded it for years.”

Another employee seemed to confirm The Quarry’s Until Dawn 2 origins but offered a different account, suggesting Sony severed ties over Supermassive releasing Dark Pictures Anthology on multiple platforms, losing the Until Dawn license.
One former employee stated, “The Quarry started as a pitch for Until Dawn, but they didn’t have the license. They burnt their bridges with Sony by releasing Dark Pictures on multiple platforms. As far as I’m aware someone else has that license now.”
The Quarry, released in 2022, was marketed as Until Dawn’s spiritual successor. This connection was never publicly revealed until now. Neither Supermassive nor Sony have commented on the end of their working relationship. The lack of acknowledgment and sequel from Supermassive is fascinating, considering their history with Until Dawn and the recent movie and port news.
Until Dawn was a critical and commercial hit for Supermassive and Sony when it launched in 2015, praised for interactive storytelling. With the sequel plans on the backburner, Supermassive instead created an interactive horror series, Dark Pictures Anthology. They retained IP rights but released on multiple platforms, reportedly straining relations with Sony. Dark Pictures’ quality and reception declined over successive entries. Meanwhile, Until Dawn’s reputation grew.

Sony recently announced an Until Dawn remake for PS5 and PC by new studio Ballistic Moon, fueling more sequel hopes. An Until Dawn movie is also in early development. Despite fans linking Supermassive to celebrate the news, they remain silent on social media regarding Until Dawn or the unmade sequel that became The Quarry.
The radio silence and lack of a Quarry sequel from Supermassive continue to intrigue fans. Exact details on the studio’s split from Sony and the decision to evolve Until Dawn 2 into The Quarry remain vague as well.
Perhaps with renewed interest thanks to the remake and movie, Supermassive may finally address the past and future of Until Dawn. For now, that horror tale remains untold.
