Toei Animation, the leading Japanese animation studio behind global hits like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, has announced its most ambitious CGI film to date – the English-language family adventure Hypergalactic.
Co-created by Sonic the Hedgehog designer Naoto Oshima and Blade Runner 2022’s Joseph Chou, Hypergalactic follows a teenage girl, her baby brother, and their protector as they search for their missing parents in a futuristic world.
Directed by Shrek 2’s David N. Weiss, the star-studded voice cast includes Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), and Emmy-winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso).

On the heels of their record-breaking hits The First Slam Dunk and One Piece Film: Red, Toei is positioning Hypergalactic to appeal to global audiences of all ages. Producer Yoshi Ikezawa described it:
“With Hypergalactic, the hugely talented game designer Oshima has created a multicultural adventure tale of epic scale — combining memorable global characters with a Japanese Anime aesthetic and a Western approach to storytelling,” said Ikezawa in a statement. “We look forward to delivering our brand of quality animation to broader global audiences beyond our existing loyal and committed fan base.”
Toei has pioneered adapting manga into successful animated films and series. Now, by blending Eastern and Western sensibilities, they aim to create quality animation for viewers beyond anime fans.

Charades will handle worldwide distribution, having previously partnered with Toei on global hits. Added Yohann Comte, co-CEO of Charades:

Leading the voice cast is Adam Devine, known for Pitch Perfect and The Righteous Gemstones. Elsie Fisher rose to fame in Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade and stars in The Addams Family. Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons has shone in Spider-Man, Whiplash, and Being the Ricardos. Finally, Emmy-winner Sam Richardson currently stars in The Afterparty and Ted Lasso.
