With less than a week before her latest film hits theaters, Madame Web star Dakota Johnson is now lashing out at streaming executives for only “wanting to do the safe thing.” These comments surfaced after an interview with L’Officiel, during which the 34-year-old actress lambasted Hollywood as being “really fucking bleak and disheartening.”
“I am discovering that it’s really fucking bleak in this industry. It is majorly disheartening. The people who run streaming platforms don’t trust creative people or artists to know what’s going to work, and that is just going to make us implode. It’s really heartbreaking. It’s just fucking so hard. It’s so hard to get anything made. All of the stuff I’m interested in making is really different, and it’s unique and it’s very forward in whatever it is.”
“We made a movie called Daddio that was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it took a lot of fighting to get that made. People are just so afraid, and I’m like, why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave? It just feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid. That’s what it feels like. Everyone who makes decisions is afraid. They want to do the safe thing, and the safe thing is really boring.”
She would even go on to discuss such hot-button topics as so-called “women’s reproductive health.”
“I mean, we have gone completely backwards in terms of reproductive rights, women’s equality, and women’s rights. It is so mind-bending. I think it’s hard to articulate because when Roe v. Wade was overturned, I think everyone thought, okay, well, this is insane, and it’ll be rectified quickly. Of course, we’re not going to be in this position. Of course this is not going to be the reality. But then weeks pass and months pass, and more and more women are denied the healthcare that they need and they deserve.”

This is just one of the many times Dakota Johnson has tried to portray herself as a victim, both as a woman and in her industry. She recently spoke about her experience on the series finale of The Office, where she described the working conditions as “The worst time of my life.” She has also talked openly about how she hates being called a “nepo baby,” due to the fact that she is the child of Hollywood stars Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. She has even spoken about how certain film roles caused her to need therapy.
If the response to the trailers for Madame Web are any indication, Ms Johnson might want to keep her therapist on speed dial. Not only has the box office been stingy when it comes to cape films, but there seems to be less than no excitement for a Spider-Man spinoff that doesn’t at least have a cameo from Spider-Man.

The 50 Shades trilogy star has even previously confessed her own concerns about the quality of this film. In a prior interview with Entertainment Weekly, she admitted that she struggled with the concept of playing a superhero. “I got sent this script, and I was like, ‘I don’t know about me being a superhero.’”
“I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic. I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!’
While many of us can sympathize and even agree with her opinion on the state of modern Hollywood, it is likely nothing more than a smokescreen to deflect from the inevitable criticism of her latest film. Madame Web hits theaters on Valentine’s Day, and it’s likely to be one of the worst-performing openings for any superhero spinoff film to date.
