True believers and all fans of Spider-Man have grown accustomed to hearing the line, “With great power, there must also come great responsibility.” This had always been the heart and soul of who Spider-Man is and was delivered in his very first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. However, S.J. Clarkson, the director of Madame Web, revealed that they decided to tweak this line and don’t seem to understand why that’s such a problem.
In the film Cassandra Web seeks to understand the source of her powers and meets with a man in Peru that is part of the mysterious Las Arañas tribe. This same man delivers the line which completely inverts the main message of Spider-Man.
“When you take on the responsibility, great power will come.” This line is then repeated again when Cassandra fully comes into her powers during the final act.
This decision to make such a change seems to come from people who don’t have any understanding of why the line matters so much to Spider-Man as a whole. It’s not about the power. It’s not about gaining power. It’s about how you’re supposed to use it responsibly.

This inversion, which is the theme of Madame Web, makes it about grasping power instead of how one should use it when they are given it.
In the very first comic, Peter has this lesson ingrained in him when he first gains powers and uses them irresponsibly. Ultimately leading to the death of his beloved Uncle Ben he could have stopped had he not been so selfish with his abilities. Having power means nothing when you are not responsible with your power.

But in the modern age of Hollywood, grasping power to use for your own benefit seems to be the norm, and it shows how callously the director and writers disregarded the entire point of Spider-Man’s story. The idea that you should be responsible so power is granted to you is actually quite a disgusting idea because it means you’re only doing those things to grab more power.
And what happens when you finally get the power that you’ve wanted if responsibility was nothing more than a means to an end?
As of right now, Madame Web is sitting at 17% critic review scores on Rotten Tomatoes and is dangerously close to uprooting Morbius as the worst Sony superhero film to date.
With the film out today, we just have to wait and see how audiences will react to this poorly conceived disaster. Leave a comment and let us know what you think of Madame Web!
