A single video broke the internet over the weekend after a clip of socialist Twitch streamer Hasan Piker went viral on Twitter / X. Hasan, who purchased a 2.74 million dollar home in Hollywood, CA, in 2021, made the unfortunate choice to compare his cushy streaming career on Twitch to the average person who works a 9-5 retail job. In the now infamous video, he makes the claim that a “normal job” won’t “suck the soul out of you.” “Yes, a real job can be gruesome, a real job can make you very tired, but a real job doesn’t suck the soul out of you the same way that nine hours of streaming absolutely will.”
This sparked a massive backlash among users on Twitter / X, with many of them lashing out at the champagne socialist for his perceived lack of awareness. As was to be expected, Hasan’s massive fanbase on Twitch, which is comprised largely of Gen Z liberals, rallied to defend his outlandish comments, claiming that people were intentionally misinterpreting the point behind his tone-deaf statement. Several other large Twitch and YouTube streamers decided to share their hot takes on the situation, with mega streamer Asmongold coming to Hasan Piker’s defense. In a recent YouTube video, Asmongold expressed sympathy for Hasan after he stirred up the social media hornet’s nest. The video currently has a 2 to 1 dislike-to-like ratio.

Nobody seems to care if one millionaire streamer can relate to another who tried comparing himself to the “common man.” Ironically, it’s recently been brought to light that Hasan Piker was born to extreme wealth. His father was the Vice President of Sebanci Holdings, a Turkish financial conglomerate with an estimated worth of 9.63 billion dollars.
YouTuber Mutahar also shared his thoughts on Twitter, echoing what many of the user base of Twitter / X were feeling. “Seeing the origin of this discourse still has me disagreeing. I don’t doubt the “social battery” draining but in most jobs you don’t have the luxury of turning off a stream or blocking out people,” he tweeted. “I don’t know maybe I’m old school but streaming/youtube will always appear to be a privileged job compared to the soulless 9-5.”

Hasan has refused to back down from the controversy, but instead responded on Twitter by tweeting out “Twitter absolutely is just straight up 4chan now so many peoples brains are cooked. one day we will study its impact on a generation of school shooters who grew up on here/reddit but it will be too late.” He has also encouraged his fans to “brigade” a Twitter/X user who was critical of his viral comments.
The political commentator is no stranger to controversy. He has previously made incredibly inflammatory statements on his Twitch streams, claiming that America deserved the terrorist attacks on 9-11, as well as seemingly defending the actions of the German government during the Second World War. He has often been ridiculed online for his lazy approach to content creation, much of which is little more than him and his Twitch viewers watching someone else’s video while he eats his DoorDash-delivered meals.
Hasan has often been accused of being a “nepo baby,” partly due to his wealthy upbringing, as well as having his career jump-started by his uncle Cenk Uyger, co-founder of The Young Turks. Hasan has made a career of wading into various topics that he seems ill-equipped to discuss, and this is just one more instance where his mouth was operating faster than his brain.
