The fate of Wonder Woman in the revamped DC Universe (DCEU) has been a topic of much speculation among fans. Despite the character’s popularity and the success of the first Wonder Woman movie directed by Patty Jenkins, the future of the Amazon warrior princess remains shrouded in uncertainty.
In a recent interview on the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins addressed the ongoing rumors surrounding a potential third Wonder Woman installment. Jenkins, who helmed the critically acclaimed 2017 Wonder Woman and the divisive 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984, confirmed that there are currently no plans for her to continue the franchise within the DCEU.
“They aren’t interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the time being,” Jenkins stated, referring to the new leadership at DC Studios, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. “It’s not an easy task, with what’s going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they are planning on doing or why, so I have sympathy for what a big job it is and they have to follow their heart and do what they’ve got planned.”
Jenkins’ comments put an end to the lingering hopes of fans who were anticipating a third Wonder Woman movie under her direction. The filmmaker had previously expressed her desire to continue the story of Diana Prince, played by Gal Gadot, and had even completed a script for a potential third installment.
However, the reception to Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 was less than stellar, with the movie receiving mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. The sequel faced criticism for its convoluted plot, pacing issues, and a perceived lack of character development for Diana herself. The film’s shortcomings may have influenced the decision to reevaluate the future of the Wonder Woman franchise within the DCEU.
While Jenkins’ involvement in the DCEU’s Wonder Woman storyline appears to be over “for the time being, easily forever,” according to her own words, the character’s fate remains uncertain. Gadot, who portrayed the iconic heroine in both Wonder Woman movies, had previously stated that she had met with Gunn and Safran, and they had assured her of their plans to develop a third Wonder Woman film with her involvement.

“I had a meeting with (DC Studios CEOs) Peter Safran and James Gunn, and they both told me that they’re going to develop a third Wonder Woman with me,” Gadot told USA Today last year. “They said, ‘You’re in the best hands, you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ Time will tell.”
As the DCEU undergoes a significant restructuring under the new leadership of Gunn and Safran, the future of Wonder Woman remains a mystery. While there are currently no confirmed plans for a third installment in the Wonder Woman franchise, fans can take solace in the fact that a Max TV series titled “Paradise Lost” is in development, which will explore the world of Themyscira, the mythical island home of the Amazons, in a “Game of Thrones-type story.”
Only time will tell how Wonder Woman’s story will unfold within the revamped DCEU, but one thing is certain: Patty Jenkins’ tenure as the director of the beloved character’s solo adventures appears to have come to an end, at least for now.

Perhaps they’re simply not interesting in doing WW with Patty Jenkins. Let’s hope that’s the case. After the WW84 debacle, there’s no way she should be in any position to give us inside information.
