Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman has been one of the few bright spots in the comic book industry after the first couple of issues saw people lining up at comic shops to purchase the book featuring Peter Parker, married to Mary Jane and children. It seems like a new formula of “give the fans what they want” might actually be something successful, if Marvel editorial can get a clue. However, someone screwed the pooch at the company and spoiled a mystery brewing in the book for the solicits for issue #4.
Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman is a reboot of the Ultimate Universe, one where something is amiss. The age of heroes never happened, leaving dark forces to fill the void. For Spider-Man, this means never having been bit by a radioactive spider. Instead, he settled down and created a family.
Spoilers ahead as we’ll discuss the story of Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man so far.

Other implications in the universe include Uncle Ben still being alive and having a job at the Daily Bugle—before him and J. Jonah Jameson are forced out because the company’s financier, the Kingpin, tells them they need to be dishonest about their news reporting.
Meanwhile, Peter Parker gets a talk from another universe letting him know there’s something going on that’s amiss, and he’s given a case with – you guessed it—the radioactive spider. After much debate, Peter Parker then lets the spider bite him and attempts to be a vigilante.
In issue #2, he fails wildly as he learns the ropes as Ultimate Spider-Man, but a Green Goblin terrorizes the town, leaving the reader to question who it is. The book clearly sets up the mystery without revealing the character’s identity, but recent Marvel previews have spoiled it.
In an article on Marvel.com for a hype piece on Ultimate Spider-Man #4 by Jonathan Hickman, the writer reveals, “Amidst cocktails, small talk is quickly dispersed as this fearless foursome discuss exposing the dark corruption that shaped their world. Little do they all know that the two men at the table have already taken matters into their own hands by suiting up as the vigilantes Spider-Man and Green Goblin!”
The identity of the Green Goblin has not been shown in the comics yet, making this a wild spoiler, especially as traditionally the Green Goblin is Norman Osborn. Though Harry Osborn took on the mantle later in the Spider-Man mythos of the Marvel universe, having him don the Green Goblin suit out the gate is a massive change and a spoiler for what’s going to happen in Ultimate Spider-Man.
Fans are excited about how this Ultimate Spider-Man universe will develop under Jonathan Hickman, and so Marvel would be best to avoid spoilers of mysteries in future storytelling.
