The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise continues to speed ahead at full force, with exciting updates on both the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie and the new Paramount+ series Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler recently confirmed on social media that filming has wrapped on the highly anticipated sequel. The clapperboard photo he shared featured decorations of key characters like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and even Shadow, teasing the potential inclusion of the fan-favorite dark hedgehog.
Shadow, the anti-hero character created by Eggman’s grandfather in the Sonic universe, appeared in an end-credits scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, sparking speculation that he will play a role in the third installment. With his mysterious backstory involving Eggman’s family, Shadow could add an intriguing new dynamic and conflict for Sonic and his friends to face. No casting has been confirmed, but Keanu Reeves and Hayden Christensen remain a popular fan choice to voice the edgy hedgehog.

Reprising their starring voice roles in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are Ben Schwartz as the speedy blue hedgehog Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as his two-tailed fox friend Tails, and Idris Elba as the powerful red echidna Knuckles. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter will also return as Tom and Maddie Wachowski, the human couple who befriend and aid Sonic. New additions to the cast include Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone in undisclosed roles. And of course, Jim Carrey will be back as the maniacal villain Dr. Eggman Robotnik.
Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but with Shadow potentially in the mix and Robotnik likely crafting a new world domination scheme, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles will surely have their work cut out for them. The stakes and action levels both seem guaranteed to reach new heights for the speedy blue blur’s third big-screen outing when Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters on December 20.

But before then, Sonic fans can get their fix with Knuckles, the new Paramount+ series focused on the powerful red echidna warrior. A recently released poster highlights Knuckles looking fierce and ready for action. In the show, Knuckles agrees to train an eccentric new protégé named Wade, played by Adam Pally. In the process, Knuckles goes on a hilarious and thrilling journey of self-discovery, with the show taking place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3.
The Knuckles cast features an array of high-profile guest stars like Stockard Channing, Edi Patterson, Scott Mescudi, Ellie Taylor, Julian Barratt, Rory McCann, Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Rob Huebel.
Reprising their film roles are Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails. Major Sonic movie creatives like director Jeff Fowler are also heavily involved with the show to translate the cinematic style to the small screen.
With Fowler himself directing the pilot, the dynamic between Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails is sure to leap off the screen. By further expanding Knuckles’ backstory, the series should perfectly set the stage for his return alongside Sonic in the big sequel coming this winter.
