NBC has opted not to proceed with a third season of its Quantum Leap reboot starring Raymond Lee, marking the end of the series after two seasons. The decision comes more than a month following the airing of the two-hour Season 2 finale on Feb. 20. The move doesn’t come as a complete surprise, given that the series, produced by Universal Television, had been uncertain about its future. This contrasts with the previous season, where Quantum Leap received an early renewal in December 2022.

A sequel to the original series, which aired on NBC from 1989-1993, Quantum Leap is set in the present day. It picks up 30 years after Dr. Sam Beckett’s disappearance into the Quantum Leap accelerator. A new team is assembled to restart the project, aiming to unravel the mysteries surrounding the machine and its creator.

Alongside Raymond Lee, the series features Ernie Hudson, Caitlin Bassett, Mason Alexander Park, and Nanrisa Lee in prominent roles.

Co-showrunners Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris served as executive producers, alongside Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer, Alex Berger, Steven Lilien, and Bryan Wynbrandt, who developed the reboot.

In a conversation with Deadline, Gero and Georgaris discussed the Season 2 finale, emphasizing that it wasn’t crafted as a series finale but provided closure in a satisfying manner.

“When we got the early renewal for Season 2, we knew we were not going to end it on a cliffhanger,” explained Georgaris. “We were going to end it on the first scene from Season 3, and we’re going to end it with the two characters together, but in a way that you never expected.”

Georgaris further addressed the uncertainty surrounding Quantum Leap’s future, acknowledging the evolving landscape of television viewership across various platforms.

“The new reality we’re all getting used to is, it’s not just about one rating anymore. It’s not just about one number. There are multiple platforms,” he said. “So the truth is, I think every showrunner and every show creator is living a bubble existence, for the most part. That just comes with it. And that’s fine.”

Universal TV President Erin Underhill expressed optimism about the series’ potential continuation but noted that it would depend on NBC’s development and the reception of 2024 drama pilots.

Following the cancellation news, Raymond Lee, who portrayed series lead Ben Song, expressed gratitude to Quantum Leap fans and viewers for their support. Similarly, co-lead Caitlin Bassett bid farewell to fans and expressed appreciation to NBC and Universal TV for the experience.

With the conclusion of Quantum Leap, viewers can find the series on Peacock.
