EA Motive, the studio behind 2023’s critically-acclaimed Dead Space remake, has shifted resources to assist with development on the next Battlefield game. To achieve this ambitious vision, a team from EA Motive led by Dead Space’s creative director Roman Campos-Oriola and executive producer Philippe Ducharme will collaborate with studios Criterion, DICE, and Ripple Effect. While this likely postpones a Dead Space sequel, EA Motive reaffirmed commitment to its in-development Iron Man game.
Support for Battlefield 2042 will conclude after Season 7: Turning Point to focus attention on the future of the first-person shooter series. Battlefield 2042 manager Byron Beede confirmed that while in-game events and maintenance will continue, official seasonal content updates will cease. He acknowledged that this news may disappoint some fans but shifting resources is necessary for what the franchise requires next.

Earlier in 2023, rumors emerged that EA Motive had been developing a remake of Dead Space 2, the acclaimed 2011 sequel to the survival horror franchise. According to journalist Jeff Grubb, Electronic Arts ultimately made the decision to cancel the Dead Space 2 remake due to underwhelming sales of January’s Dead Space remake.
Grubb reported that the Dead Space 2 remake was in the early pre-production phase when EA pulled the plug. The company chose to shelve the project, feeling that lackluster commercial reception to the remake did not justify further investment in the series remasters.
EA was quick to refute these claims, stating bluntly there was no validity to the cancellation story being circulated. EA Motive developers later clarified they had never even considered a Dead Space 2 remake proposal, rendering the rumors moot.

The initial Dead Space remake launched in January 2023 as a reimagining of the 2008 original with significantly enhanced visuals, audio design and gameplay expansions. Early sales data remains unpublished by EA, however the horror title was the best-selling new game in the US during its release month.

While Grubb’s reporting prompted speculation, EA’s unambiguous denial and additional context suggest rumors of a canceled Dead Space 2 remake were unfounded. Many fans likely hope the Dead Space franchise can live on if January’s warmly received remake lays the groundwork for a resurgence.
The Dead Space remake launched in January 2023 to critical acclaim, especially for its enhanced gameplay and audio-visual achievements compared to the 2008 original. While EA has not shared sales data, the survival horror title was January 2023’s best-selling new game in the United States.
The studio now houses two major teams; one collaborating with DICE on the next Battlefield and another developing the highly-anticipated Iron Man video game. EA Motive noted excellent progress over the past year on the Iron Man project, hitting a key internal milestone and laying groundwork for the road ahead. The superhero action title remains an important priority for the studio.
So while a Dead Space 2 remake is not currently in development, the door remains open for a sequel to EA Motive’s 2023 horror hit. For now, the studio has its hands full between the new Battlefield, Iron Man, and potentially supporting post-launch content for Dead Space.
