Mark Millar Mulls Writing Public Domain Superman Story In Latest Comic Industry Shakeup

Mark Millar has been making waves in the comic industry in recent months, first, with his robust defense of comic shop owner Glenn O’Leary, a man canceled by a mob for being frustrated with the low sales of mainstream comics. Second, Mark Millar announced the movement of his books in Millarwold to Dark Horse Comics, followed by announcements for reprints and new books. This week, he’s made waves by discussing the imminent DC Comics bomb of Superman coming to the public domain.

One of Mark Millar’s most famous stories is Superman: Red Son Elseworlds, in which Superman landed in Russia instead of the United States. The book sold through the roof and received awards and, eventually, a DC Animated adaptation. It seemed like a darker version of Superman was on his mind as Mark Millar also created Juptier’s Children.

The Netflix creator has proposed different ideas to save the comic industry and get good talent back working at these companies again, as it’s clear he loves the medium and the industry.

Mark Millar has the internet talking again by mentioning Superman coming into the public domain.

“I’d been thinking about writing a Superman story late summer, but Superman goes public domain in 9 years so I can write my stories in 5 years time & pay the best artists in the industry to draw them so it’s all banked and ready for me to publish myself in 2033,” Mark Millar tweeted.

He followed up, “All my favourite artists take forever, but if I gave them a 4 year deadline to draw each arc I’d happily bankroll them and maybe do six arcs in total, published over 3 years. This could be amazing. In the second year I could even have Batman in there. Something to mull over! :)”

While Superman may end up in the public domain, we’ve seen many instances of these companies like DC Comics getting very litigious over trademark, but if someone like Mark Millar paves the way to open the floodgates, we might see a resurgence of Superman stories by people outside of the Big 2’s sphere of influence.

Shi creator Billy Tucci chimed in on the thread, saying, “I’ve been having this very same conversation with many #comicbook pros #indiecomics superstars. In nine years you are going to be seeing the greatest Superman stories being published in over 30 years.”

Superstar artist Kelley Jones responded, saying, “I’ll buy it!”

Not everyone seemed happy with the announcement, as Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool took to his blog to speculate that Mark Millar approached DC Comics to write Superman, and they said no, prompting this idea.

It seems to be Bleeding Cool trying to stir the pot and attack Mark Millar’s credibility, though the creator remains a favorite among fans despite attacks from major players in the comic industry whisper network as of late.

Regardless, Mark Millar penning a Superman public domain comic would shake up the industry like nothing we’ve ever seen. What do you think about this? Leave a comment down below.
