It’s not news that Games Workshop has gone woke. They admitted as much themselves when they released a statement about “diversity and inclusion” during the BLM riots of 2020. But now they are trying to retcon and lie to their longtime customers and fans, with the official Warhammer Twitter account claiming that there have always been female Custodes.
This all began when an anonymous Twitter user asked the Warhammer account, “Why did you make female custodes?” For anyone not initiated into the Warhammer universe, the Adeptus Custodes “are a force of individual warriors, each a bastion in his own right and a sentinel of unmatched capability and singular purpose created to counter any possible threat.” These god-like warriors have always been canonically male, the same as the Space Marines who are subservient to the Custodes.
The following response from the Warhammer Twitter account set off a digital firestorm. “Since the first of the Ten Thousand were created, there have always been female Custodes,” the Warhammer account tweeted back. Not only is this incorrect, as many Twitter users and fans of the lore pointed out, but it appears to be an attempt by Games Workshop to retcon their own franchise and appease a tiny percentage of woke activists on Twitter.
The culture war has long been fought over Hollywood productions and the failing video game industry, both of which have heeded massive ground to this noisy minority of radical leftists. Tabletop and roleplaying games have suffered at the hand of wokeness as well, with Dungeons and Dragons and Battletech both caving to the DEI mob.
Now Warhammer appears to be their latest victim, with many Twitter users declaring “victory” over this massive change to Custodes canon. The cultural Marxists and vultures who are in constant need of validation and “representation” have been labeling anyone who disagrees with this change to the lore as “tourists,” “chuds,” “misogynists,” etc, despite the fact that there are plenty of strong female characters already existing in the Warhammer universe.
One user would go on to write, “Ladies and Gentlemen of wokehammer. We Won. The Gate was crushed (again). Chudhammer has been defeated. And unlike them, we actually have proof of said victory Their men are fleeing the battlefield as we speak. Reduced to mere lolcows…”
“With femstodes being canon and LGBT minis being acknowledged in White Dwarf of all places, its been a massive blow to their morale in the culture war in just one week. It’s over.”
Adding gasoline to the fire, the Warhammer Twitter account has begun banning anyone who dares to criticize or question the rationale behind this lore-breaking decision. What began as a few Twitter users being banned has become a massive blockchain, with numerous Twitter users saying that they were blocked for simply asking questions about this change to the Custodes’ lore.
This is not a new trend, unfortunately. Many community managers across the gaming industry have recently been exposed as woke activists who will ban users at will simply for questioning decisions that are being made that seem to fit a far-left ideological agenda.
Even former World of Warcraft lead developer Mark Kern (@Grummz on Twitter) has chimed in, creating a Twitter thread that intricately debunks the claim of female Custodes “always existing.”
“ALL the artwork of Custodes have been MALE in these Codexes,” Grummz would point out. “The lore is very clear about this. Custodes are a BROTHERHOOD, and SONS of Nobles. All the artwork confirms this.”
Now we are even seeing former employees from Games Workshop defend this bastardization of canon by claiming that the Warhammer lore was never supposed to be taken as fact. Nick Davis, who claims to have finished his career at Games Workshop while working on White Dwarf magazine, has stated that “everything was supposed to contradict.“
“The ‘hobby’ as I like to call it is supposed to be fun, a uniting force between gamers, to create friendships, a social function, something to be enjoyed and share,” Nick wrote on Twitter.

“You never were supposed to build silos of lore, because the very idea of the Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 universe was the history was so convoluted and fragmented there was no such thing as ‘fact.’ Everything was supposed to contradict… That was the purpose.”
