Marvel Comics has failed to generate hype for Amazing Spider-Man for a long time. Between the awkward relaunch with Zeb Wells and the recent event, Gang War, fans have all but turned off from the comic. Now, leading comic expert Wes from Thinking Critical has gone on record calling the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man #50 “The Stupidest Marvel Comics Spider-Man Idea Ever!”
Spider-Man has been in a rut ever since J. Michael Straczynski and Joe Quesada’s infamous One More Day storyline, where Mephisto allowed Peter Parker to wish his marriage out of existence in a deal with the devil to let Aunt May live for a little bit longer. The storyline promptly ended any pretext of continuity as it reset Spider-Man without purpose. Since then, writers have ignored Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s relationship.
Zeb Wells made matters worse when he introduced this new run with Mary Jane having two children from a man who looked like Daily Wire contributor Matt Walsh, who turned out to be someone else’s kids from another dimension where Mary Jane was just raising the kids. However, it all ended up with Peter Parker getting cucked regardless, and the relationship still hasn’t been repaired.
Marvel Comics has tried several events to bolster interest in Spider-Man, from killing Ms. Marvel in the comic to building events around the book like Gang War. Still, the writing has been atrocious, and fans have no reason to latch onto the book. Add in John Romita Jr.’s phoned-in art from time to time, and it’s a recipe for disaster for the book.
Even more egregious on the Mary Jane level is that they’ve turned her into a superhero. She goes by Jackpot and is having Mary Sue adventures with Black Cat in a completely nonsensical forced storyline where everyone gets to be a superhero.

Not to be outdone by himself with bad ideas, Zeb Wells apparently everyone gets to be a Goblin as well.
Spider-Man Editor Nick Lowe first teased Amazing Spider-Man #50 by saying, “AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #50 is maybe the best comic ever.”
Just in case fans might be confused that he meant the John Romita Sr. classic of “Spider-Man No More,” Nick Lowe followed up with a reply saying, “LGY #944 for those keeping track at home.”
LGY stands for “legacy numbering,” where Marvel tries to milk milestone issues from the original numbering in addition to restarting the series with all new #1 issues for sales gimmick purposes.
Once Marvel revealed what #50 would be about, they posted a teaser image of what appears to be Peter Parker as the Green Goblin, or “Spider-Goblin” as they call it, in yet another cringy mashup of characters as Zeb Wells and Marvel Comics are apparently out of original ideas.

Wes from Thinking Critical made a video on the topic, citing how tiring it is having Marvel Comics pull these stunts and explaining how he’s sick of so many goblins—as there’s already been Queen Goblin, Red Goblin, and Gold Goblin done over the last few years to make the whole concept of a Green Goblin less special and more of an annoying trope.
“They are clearly out of ideas,” Wes says. “There’s nothing left for them to do with the character. Kill Peter Parker off.”
His sentiments echo what many fans are posting regarding the topic, as Zeb Wells has one of the most loathed runs in Spider-Man history, with an event like this only making matters worse.

I’ve got it! With all of those differently coloured Goblins …
Mighty Morphin’ Power Goblins!
There you go Marvel, you can have that one on me. (I’d ask for a percentage, but with your sales, why bother?)
