The reality of youtube and any social media is you gotta clickbait to get clicks.
Here’s overnight views between clickbait (left) and me just promoting a book I love for the sake of promoting art (right).
I stopped writing for major journalism outlets because they would NEVER let me do columns like the one on the right — and it’s because our culture is so toxic no one clicks on things like the ones on the right. It wasn’t fun for me.
On my own stuff I try to do mostly stuff on the right, but sprinkle some click entertainment in to get people in.
As a couple of days drag on the differential between the two will become exponential (the tess fowler video will probably hit 1K views or so). It’s sad that audiences are like this — but it’s how the world works.
I post this so you can check your own clicking/viewing habits and pay attention. Because we need to SUPPORT more content like the videos on the right here to make a change, and it requires thought and discipline in our habits.
This has been a PSA. It may be against my best interests in growth to point this stuff out, but someone has to, and I am hoping my core audience values earnesty and transparency above all else.
Support books like Dynamite Thor because they’re GREAT CONTENT. There’s no cause behind it, it’s just fun. This is how we transform culture. Back now.
