If you saw the craziness this weekend, Fantastic Four and former Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott went on a bizarre tirade regarding President Trump — an moreover, anyone who votes for the President.
You can read the full rant here.
Bounding Into Comics, of course, covered the topic as they should being a comic news website. Slott called their work a “hit piece” though it was mostly just a compilation of Slott’s panic-outrage tweets about the president.
This one was a little different though, reading:
This administration is NOT on top of this emergency.
They’re ignoring or contradicting their OWN experts.
People are dying.
And he’s golfing at his resort AGAIN and profiting off it.
I’m NOT saying f*ck you for voting for him.
I AM saying f*ck you if you vote for him AGAIN.
A direct swearing at people who would vote for the president.
This becomes a lot different than “just politics”, as it’s not Slott expressing his opinions on the corona outbreak situation (I’m sure he’s as informed as his tweet suggests), or policies which should be used to combat it (a wall, closing the borders, and martial law would be nice, but for some reason I doubt Mr. Slot wants these easy virus-stopping measures implemented…), but instead it’s a direct attack on half the country with expletives.
It’s being nasty to people out there who think differently than he does.
Which is why there’s such a visceral reaction.
Any comic fan who votes a certain way just went “huh, I’m not going to support this guy” because how could you when Slott acts like he might go off the rails and mass-shoot a crowd of us? That’s not the same as advocating for a policy, expressing one’s politics, etc.
It’s deranged.
The really sad part is if this were a right-wing person saying something like this about President Obama or whoever, you know Disney/Marvel would fire them instantly.
But in Slott’s case, he’s protected. He has no real danger for becoming unhinged and saying nasty things. The politics is approved of by the big corporations.
Which is why we need to change the comic culture. This can’t be the default way comic creators treat others. We’re supposed to be about making fun entertainment people can enjoy, believing in good and heroism again. And it’s supposed to be for our children.
There’s no way I’d allow my children to read books by someone who says things like this.
There is an alternative, though, and it’s time to back indie comics. We need to peel off the band-aid of this nasty Slott-ridden corporate culture and change by supporting new projects, new heroes, real morals.
