In many ways, Coulter is right in that the tax code is such a mess, so difficult to comprehend, so easy to abuse for people with substantive amounts of money (or corporations likewise), that something needs to be done, and yet the politicians on both sides of the aisle will do nothing about it because they’re beholden to donors who benefit from it.
However, the tweet referenced above has been used in a way where it’s very easy to construe it as something otherwise, because we are close to an election. It’s emboldened democrats because of the way it was phrased, with all of twitter aflame with comments saying she’s right, but she’s still evil and racist!
The problem with the tweet is the main premise — that the New York Times ever reports ANYTHING correctly.
Did Trump pay “no taxes?”
It’s already come out that the story is completely false — like EVERY SINGLE NYT STORY EVER. There’s reports of Trump paying $1.1 Million to the Treasury in 2016 and more in 2017. The smart thing to do would be to call out the NYT for lying, call them fake news, embolden Coulter’s base.
But instead she acts as if they’re totally forthright, totally on the up and up, and just doing their journalistic duty.
So why say anything which could completely embolden the enemy and get them motivated to vote?
It’s a great way to lose, but then, conservatives seem to love to lose.
