Yesterday was Dick van Dyke’s 95th birthday, so I went on Prime and started watching the Dick van Dyke show, a sticom with Mary Tyler Moore about a TV writer and his family.
It was nice to watch something where there’s a happy family who care about each other, where the father is working hard and isn’t incompetent, where the mother is overly-worried about her children, and moreover everyone is happy at home together.
What we watch matters, and the culture hasn’t presented a happy, normal family in an environment like this for decades. Everyone is “flawed”. The fathers are dimwits now, the mothers drunk and out of touch, the children snark all of the time.
It amazes me someone doesn’t buck the trend and just use this as a template. Maybe Unauthorized will do it soon?
