Jonathan Majors, set to play the major villain Kang the Conqueror in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU), has been found guilty of reckless assault and harassment. Despite the guilty verdict, the tone surrounding Majors’ case hints at the complexities involved. It won’t matter as far as Disney’s concerned, however, as they’ve reportedly cut ties with the actor.
The verdict was reached by a New York jury after over four hours of deliberation across three days, leading to Majors facing potential imprisonment of up to one year. However, he was found not guilty of intentional assault and aggravated harassment, which adds nuance to the narrative.
The charges stemmed from an incident where Majors called 911 on Mar. 25, claiming to find his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari, unconscious in their apartment. The ensuing trial exposed a tumultuous relationship, with Jabbari testifying that Majors caused injuries during an altercation in their car.

Despite the guilty verdict, Majors expressed gratitude to his supporters and looks forward to clearing his name, possibly through an appeal. His attorney, Priya Chaudhry, highlighted the challenges of the past eight months, emphasizing the need for faith in the legal process.
Disney-owned Marvel Studios swiftly responded to the verdict by severing ties with Majors, dropping him from the role of Kang the Conqueror. This decision poses a significant challenge for the MCU, considering Majors’ pivotal role in upcoming projects, including Avengers: Kang Dynasty. The studio now faces the dilemma of either recasting Kang or altering the storyline to accommodate the absence of this central character.
The fallout from Majors’ legal troubles has already impacted his career, with his PR team, management, and Disney-owned Searchlight Features distancing themselves from the actor. The reverberations extend to the cancellation of the film “The Man in My Basement” and the removal of “Magazine Dreams” from Searchlight Pictures’ release schedule.
The case’s broader implications touch upon the challenges faced by successful men in the era of the #MeToo movement, where fights where both parties are culprit can be misconstrued and lead to severe consequences but only for the males in the situation. The defense portrayed Jabbari as a less-than-credible witness, suggesting potential ulterior motives following the breakup.
As the MCU grapples with the aftermath, questions linger about the fate of Kang the Conqueror and the ripple effects on the interconnected Avengers storyline. Marvel may face the difficult choice of recasting or altering its carefully planned narrative, impacting the highly anticipated Avengers: Kang Dynasty.
