Disney Is Attempting Yet Another X-Files Reboot, Despite The Failures Of Past Attempts

The X-Files, a once-revered sci-fi series from the ’90s, is reportedly gearing up for yet another attempt at a revival revival, this time under Disney’s watchful eye. While fans may have a glimmer of hope, the show’s recent lackluster attempts at resurrection raise skepticism about the success of this impending reboot.

According to Bloomberg, Disney is eyeing a “new version” of The X-Files, with Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, at the helm. However, the exact nature of this reboot remains shrouded in mystery, leaving fans and critics alike questioning its potential.

After 11 seasons and two movies, stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, who portrayed iconic FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, have invested ample time in the series. The big question looms: will they return for this latest endeavor? Anderson’s recent comments suggest a reluctance, stating, “It just feels like such an old idea. I’ve done it, I did it for so many years, and it also ended on such an unfortunate note.”

The X-Files, which originally debuted in 1993, followed Mulder and Scully as they investigated unsolved paranormal cases, captivating audiences with its mix of conspiracy theories, aliens, and government cover-ups. The show’s initial success seeped into pop culture, creating a dedicated fan base that eagerly awaited new episodes.

However, recent attempts to revive the series have fallen short. The 2016 revival, spanning Season 11, became the least-watched series in the show’s history, averaging only 5.34 million viewers per episode. This pales in comparison to Season 5’s peak popularity, which garnered 19.8 million viewers per episode.

IGN’s review of the Season 11 premiere highlighted the disappointment, giving it a lukewarm 5.5/10 and describing it as “clumsy, harried, and hacky.” The attempt to recapture the essence of the original show seemed forced and failed to resonate with both critics and viewers.

Now, as news circulates about Disney’s involvement and Ryan Coogler’s potential role, skepticism remains high. Coogler’s success with Black Panther doesn’t necessarily translate to a seamless reboot of a ’90s sci-fi series, and the lack of clarity regarding the direction of the new version adds to the uncertainty.

The reluctance of key cast members to return, coupled with past disappointments, raises the question: Can The X-Files break the revival curse? The revival’s success hinges on whether it can capture the essence of the original series while offering fresh, compelling content to meet the expectations of a more discerning audience.

As fans await further details, one can’t help but wonder if the show’s magic can be rekindled or if it’s best left as a nostalgic gem of the past. Feel free to share your thoughts on this potential revival in the comments below.
