It’s been a bad month for Doctor Who, with the 60th Anniversary specials heralding the return of David Tennant ending in a whimper in the ratings amidst fans scratching their heads at the direction of the show as the reins were passed to Ncuti Gatwa. The problems continued into The Church on Ruby Road, which marked the lowest-rated premiere for a new Doctor since William Hartnell first took on the role in the 1960s. In a new interview with The Independent, new companion Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday, confirms the show is about to get worse for fans.
Troubles started for the show from the moment the 60th Anniversary Special aired, when Russell T. Davies, writer and showrunner, put a proverbial middle finger up at fans by introducing a new “Rose,” but this time a trans man pretending to be a woman. If audiences didn’t accept this new character, the dialogue beat the audience over the head with redundant and patronizing dialogue as characters repeatedly referred to the guy as Donna Noble’s “beautiful daughter” repeatedly.

Russell T. Davies further riled up fans against this incarnation of the show, giving an interview to the Radio Times stating the new season will upset fans and “annoy people,” making it clear he is intentionally causing outrage with what fans consider poor writing choices for future Doctor Who episodes.
In The Church On Ruby Road, however, the opening sequence somehow managed to get worse with the political agenda. It showed Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor dancing in a skirt and blouse in a club while Millie Gibson looks on. His new female companion then proceeds to get in a car with a clear transgender person who towers over the rest of the women while wearing fishnets. To make it worse, that man sang a sultry, feminine Christmas song to drill into the heads of audiences that this will be the new normal.
Fandom Pulse already published an article on the cringy, musical Goblin Song, which you can read about here.
The media, meanwhile, has been gleeful about the burning down of the Doctor Who franchise, already calling fans who dislike the poorly written episode “racist” in a Newsweek article. The Independent, while interviewing Millie Gibson about her new Ruby Sunday role, added in their editorial about the “outrage brigade” and said fans will “continue to clutch pearls.”
It wasn’t the worst part of the interview. Millie Gibson echoes what Ncuti Gatwa and Russell T. Davies already said about furthering a leftist agenda through the show at the expense of long-time fans.
“There’s so many controversial elements to this season – the good sort of controversy – and it’s what we need to see on our tellies,” Millie Gibson said. The hope, allegedly, is that Doctor Who will be able to capture a Gen Z audience by adding wokeness to its programming.
She elaborated that many fans will think, “This isn’t the Doctor Who I know,” demonstrating that Russell T. Davies will be intentionally making a deconstructive mockery of what came before in Doctor Who lore.
This echoes statements Ncuti Gatwa made, stating, “I live in a very leftist, liberal bubble. And, in fact, there’s a really great episode coming up next year where we lean into that.”
With so much political drivel intentionally being inserted into the show, this incarnation of Doctor Who has the potential to fail even worse than the end of Jody Whittaker’s run, which was only garnering a paltry 3 million viewers in the ratings, the absolute worst in the show’s history.
