Much has been said of Science Fiction fandom’s constant relationship with child predators and sexual abusers over the years. From David Asimov, to Marion Zimmer Bradley, to Arthur C. Clarke, to Ed Kramer, and so on, the examples are numerous. Despite the repeated convictions, pedophilia remains an issue to this very day that the community cannot quite shake off. In fact, when the revelations about Bradley and her husband, Walter Breen, were first uncovered, no internal investigation into SFWA or the surrounding community was made at all, despite claims by victims that more than the two were involved in the abuse. Unfortunately, wishing reality away didn’t solve the problem, and the pattern continues yet again.
In November of 2023, Michael Everts, 48, was arrested after being profiled by the FBI for months. Though he was the gym owner of FIT Personal Training in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, he had allegedly been soliciting under-aged boys for sexual favors for months, not knowing they were, in truth, federal agents monitoring him. The revelations were talked about for a short period before the news cycle moved on to the next big story.

As monstrous as this disturbing report was, what was left unsaid was that Everts was also a Science Fiction aficionado with a book YouTube channel, Fit 2B Read. He even made videos with Science Fiction authors appearing in them. In other words, this is yet another account of a member of Science Fiction fandom being involved in pedophilia.
Everts’ channel is mostly typical book YouTuber material such as top ten lists and reviews. There is not much out of the ordinary to be found on it. However, what should be noted are two extraordinarily long videos featuring lists which attempt to rank the top Science Fiction novels of all time with numbers as high as 210 and 150. Said videos include cameos of Science Fiction authors in conversation with Everts about said books and what they meant to them, though they only contain portions of their conversations through recording. In fact, these videos have attracted many in the surrounding community to his YouTube channel for discussion. As of this writing, the channel is still up and the comments are open for all.
This discovery would be little cause for concern if this had not been an unaddressed pattern in Science Fiction fandom for decades. Crimes of pedophilia have repeatedly cropped up and have a habit of never being addressed by the community, or worse, shouted down and mocked by those with institutional power. One could point to many key fandom members, but a more recent example includes former Tor Books author Patrick Tomlinson associating with individuals such as Dominic Franchetti, DJ Matthew “Jackson” Jones, and tech reporter Peter “DrPizza” Bright, all of which were convicted for pedophilia.

Tomlinson’s own posts on social media also touch on such subjects:
Were this an uncommon problem with Science Fiction fandom, all this coincidence could be construed as merely unlucky. But there are too many similar examples to go through in this community to allow the benefit of the doubt. Such discussions on pedophilia’s relationship with Science Fiction have been going on for decades.
These troubles go back even further with the conviction of Isaac Asimov’s own son in the year 1998, having himself been one of the largest distributors of child pornography ever uncovered. Despite his conviction, Asimov spent no time in jail and, to this day has absolutely no trace online or even a photo available of him even a quarter of a century later. How is it exactly that Isaac Asimov’s own son was able to do such a thing while receiving less than a slap on the wrist by law enforcement? The world may never know.
Nonetheless, the Science Fiction community has not earned itself the right to avoid falling under suspicion when one such as Everts is allowed to be included among their number and is then arrested for a crime many others in their circles have been arrested for many times in the past. That is a sign of deeper entrenched issues in the community not yet exorcised, and shows a hesitancy to even address such serious charges in the first place.
As the old saying goes, where there is smoke, there is fire. Science Fiction fandom has allowed itself to burn for so long that there is little left of the building WorldCon built nearly a century ago in 1939. Will the shrinking number of members put out the flames or allow themselves to be crushed in the remains along with the rest of the dead wood? The choice is theirs.
Regardless, the chances of Everts being the last example of this degenerate fandom behavior is extraordinarily low. Make it lower by saying no to Science Fiction fandom.
What do you think of the sci-fi pedo sting? Leave a comment and let us know.

Re: David Asimov.
I believe I can help answer the mystery. The US Attorney who signed off on the plea deal had a name: Robert Mueller.
Same guy who would later appear as a general fixer in other cases, and most prominently in the Trump show trials.
