Pop Culture Analyst RazörFist Scorns Marvel Studios’ Reboot Of Daredevil: Born Again

Yesterday, RazörFist, Hugo-nominated writer, sci-fi and geek culture gadfly, posted to X, ripping into Disney Marvel for their plan to revive the Daredevil franchise with Daredevil: Born Again. He did so because of the latest MCU failure in Echo, which is receiving dismal ratings from fans of Marvel Studios.

RazörFist posted, “If Echo is their best effort at mimicking the style and themes of Netflix’s Daredevil… just cancel Born Again and spare us all the agony. I don’t care if Foggy or Karen are in the show. I’m full up on Member Berry pudding. The original writers/producers are gone. Let it die.”

The truth is, the MCU franchise as it stands is dead. It was a great run, they did some good stuff, and stayed, as far as I know, true to the original material. But, the original writers, the guys, and gals that did the great work, have moved on with their careers. The producers have moved on, and so, sadly, should Netflix. The problem, as RazörFist sees it, is this steaming pile of drek.

The folks that are producing the current crop of M-She-U, like Marvel’s Echo, and writing the series are the same group that would be doing any new Daredevil work, like Daredevil: Born Again. Even if Marvel Studios brings back the cast from the original Daredevil show, if the writers are not up to the task, the show will fail. Based on what we’ve seen of Echo, these folks are too busy trying to cover all the DEI bases to write entertaining work.

Echo is a homage to every stereotype of how badly Native Americans are screwed over, how evil White-folk is, and why it’s okay to do anything you want to white folk to get back for what happened to your ancestors. If you squint just the tiniest amount, you can see Hamas standing being substituted out for the Native Americans. Echo is a very faintly veiled kiss on the lips of Hamas and their actions.

Netflix’s Daredevil, at its best, was great stuff. It’s quite possible to send whatever message you want to send within a franchise and still make good film… MASH, for example, was violently anti-war (if such a thing is possible) and yet vastly entertaining, even to this old military horse. The difference is in tone and humor.

RazörFist followed up with another comment regarding Daredevil: Born Again, stating, “Unless the writers and producers reprise theirs, it will just be more boilerplate Disney detritus wrapped in a Daredevil skin-suit.”

If Disney’s writers could understand how to take it lightly, how to be just a little gentle in their depictions, how to show some good people along with the bad, and how to make it entertaining, they could still get their points across.

RazörFist has always stated similarly, calling on his fans and audiences to reject modernity in favor of classic pulp heroism. He’s stated before, “If you are weary of watching people with giant muscles and f***ing superpowers sob at their problems while Wonder Wahmen braids her armpit airs and grouses about gender quotas, it may be time for you to make the same jump I did some time ago.”

Let’s look at how MASH did it as an example: The writer’s positions were that war and the military suck. OK, but they take one of the main characters, Col. Henry Potter, and make him a career soldier, who’s ‘Old School,’ takes no shit, and yet is likable and sympathetic. That makes the guest stars that show up that are militant death and violence for glory types, like Col. Flag, palatable and easy to make fun of.

That’s the basic thing. If Marvel Studios writers want to put across a message, they need to make it fun or at least entertaining. If they use a ten-pound sledgehammer to get your point across, people aren’t going to line up to see your stuff.

Echo’s writers’ toolbox consists of nothing but ten-pound sledges. Keep them away from Daredevil.

What do you think of RazörFist’s call to cancel Daredevil: Born Again after Marvel failed so badly with Echo? Leave a comment and let us know.
