In its report, Bloomberg quotes Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase, who focuses on the display market, as saying that the console that replaces the Switch but has not yet been named will have an 8-inch LCD screen and be released later in 2024. To put things in perspective, the diagonal screen size of the OLED model is 7 inches, while the standard Switch’s screen is 6.2 inches.

As of last year, partner studios were in possession of development kits, and Nintendo was scheduled to launch its next-generation console in the second half of 2024, according to Fandom Pulse. It also claims that the next generation console has an LCD screen rather than an OLED one to save money and can be used in portable mode, similar to the Nintendo Switch. There are also reports that it has a cartridge slot for real games.
Given that Nintendo released an OLED version of the original Switch console, some fans were disappointed to learn that the Switch 2 will instead have an LCD screen. Later on in the game, Nintendo might pull off the same ruse with the Switch 2, releasing an OLED model. Another analyst earlier this year estimated that the Switch 2 would retail for $400 at launch, with higher-quality games.

Still, there’s a crucial query: is Switch 2 backward compatible? In other words, can it run physical or digital original Switch games? The head of Nintendo of America, Doug Bowser, dismissed rumors about the Switch 2 and mentioned the Nintendo Account as a constant during the “transition,” which is inevitable.
“We want to minimize the dip that usually occurs in the final year of one cycle and the start of the next,” Bowser stated. “While I am unable to comment on the potential features of a new platform, the Nintendo Account provides a solid foundation for that communication while we make the switch.”
Although the exact date of Nintendo’s new console reveal is unknown, there could be some clues revealed during the company’s annual February Direct, which usually serves as a preview for the upcoming year. Meanwhile, the Switch keeps chugging along, with new Princess Peach games and an HD remaster of Paper Mario Thousand-Year Door on the schedule.
