Savage Dragon has a long history, and Erik Larsen has done amazing work with indie comics, originally in Gary Carlson’s Megaton book, which is where Dragon first premiered. The long series honored its roots as Larsen eventually tied in the Dragon story from Megaton into his main line, but fans have also been treated to collections of these old stories in recent years with a Megaton Complete Collection and Savage Dragon The Ultimate Collection Hardcovers. Now, the Vanguard stories from Megaton are being colored for the first time in a special 100-page issue of Savage Dragon.
The collected editions have done wonders to bring these stories to new fans, as readers get to experience the full glory of the1980s indie comic scene. Megaton not only featured Erik Larsen’s work but had early art from Rob Liefeld, Butch Guice, and Frank Fosco, making it a cult classic among comic collectors.

Savage Dragon has also lived on in collected editions, finally getting oversized hardcovers in the form of The Ultimate Collection. Prior to these, the only way to read the old issues was to read the black-and-white Savage Dragon Archives.
Now, for the first time, some of Megaton is being printed in color in Savage Dragon #267. The Vanguard stories from issues 2, 3, and 4 are collected in the 30th Anniversary Special issue and colored. The first Vanguard story was already reprinted in an earlier issue.
Creator Gary Carlton wrote on Facebook about the special issue, saying, “Hey all you Megaton fans! The new Savage Dragon #267 100 page special is out and contains colored versions of the Vanguard stories from Megaton issues 2, 3 and 4. This is the first time they’ve appeared in color and are done in Erik’s retro coloring style. The rest of the issue is a blast too. Make sure you go out and get a copy! Thanks Erik!!”

The issue features the wedding of Angel Murphy and Frank Darling Jr. as its main storyline and is followed by a couple of backups before reprinting the classic Vanguard stories.
Vanguard marks the first appearance of Dragon, with the coloration of these done as a special edition for the 30th anniversary of the Savage Dragon comic.
Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon #267 is $9.99 for 100 pages of comics and is available now at local comic shops.
