In a recent interview with Radio Times, Doctor Who’s former showrunner, Steven Moffat, showed how out of touch he is with Doctor Who fans. His tenure during Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi’s eras as the Doctor was met with mixed responses, but he saw the writing was on the wall with Jody Whittaker incoming and passed the torch to Chris Chibnall, for one of the most hated eras in Doctor Who history. Ncuti Gatwa has since taken over as The Doctor, but fan reaction to his first appearances has not been positive. Still, Steven Moffat speaks highly of the new Doctor.
Ncuti Gatwa’s era began with a whimper, with a 60th Anniversary Special introduction and Christmas Special for the first full episode that fans mostly panned for leaning heavily into identity politics.
While Ncuti Gatwa hasn’t achieved the lowest all-time ratings for the show as of yet, he has a disastrous start with audiences tuned out for the Christmas Special, which typically are some of the show’s highest-rated episodes, coupled with it being a premier of a new Doctor, it spells disaster for Russell T. Davies and the BBC team.
Steven Moffat is undeterred in his recent interview, saying of Ncuti Gatwa, “Well, I think Ncuti is going to be [an] amazing Doctor, he’s going to be different. But I’ve already seen this, I think we all have in The Giggle, that he’s got all the command and all the presence of a classic Doctor, plus a whole funky new thing that’s going on. And that’s what we need.” The interview was first reported by That Park Place.
Referring to a black actor as “funky” is an odd choice of words for the white writer and producer. It sounds like Steven Moffat is trying to signal that he’s part of the woke team by making a stereotypical reference to Ncuti’s skin color. This is par for the course for how the woke act and don’t realize how patronizing they are.
Steven Moffat continued, “Because, you know, the funky new thing’s great, but what you’ve really got to have is, ‘I’m the guy who gives the orders.”
There have already been rumors ast to Ncuti Gatwa’s exit swirling around the internet. Both he and companion Millie Gibson voiced they were looking for other acting gigs after they filmed the second series, of which filming is wrapping up soon this year. Despite the protests of producers from Bad Wolf claiming the rumors were false, Millie Gibson’s exit from the show was announced shortly after.
According to Bad Wolf, Ncuti Gatwa’s contract goes through 2029, but with low ratings and poor fan reactions, it’s possible he could make an early exit. Perhaps fans aren’t as into his “funky jive” as Steven Moffat.
