Dynamite Entertainment just released on Wednesday, 7 February 2024 a most anticipated 1st issue, the thunderous return of the ThunderCats written by Delcan Shavley and artist Drew Moss. Dynamite acquired the rights to ThunderCats from DC Comics. The series was another big cartoon/toy juggernaut in the 80s next to Transformers, He-Man, and GI Joe. The series has been lying dormant overall since the rebooted 2011 cartoon by Cartoon Network and the toy line handled by Bandai.
This new series seems to be taking a “Year One” approach with the surviving cast crash landed on Third Earth escaping the destruction of Thundera while being actively pursued by the Mutants, who are led by the villainous mummy Mumm-Ra. Lion-O first wields the Sword of Omens while being trained under Panthro who thinks he is not ready which leads to Lion-O trying to prove he is worthy of being the leader the cats need all on his own.

While having not read anything by Shavley, he seems to fully understand the source material as well it seems with his writing, and he is a fan of the series. Moss’s art looks like he has already been well acquainted with the series, as the characters in the book look exactly like they jumped from the animation of the cartoon. The series has been anticipated to be a huge success with a preorder of 100,000 copies but since artist Rob Liefeld dropped his cover for the book, over 170,000 additional copies were ordered.
Newcomers to the series and old fans alike will enjoy this issue from start to finish, and I’m highly looking forward to the next issue. This issue spent pages setting up and therefore may appeal more strongly to newcomers than existing fans with the action starting more than halfway through the book. Here is a 6-page preview of the book so you can decide for yourself if you want to get the Dynamite book.

Here is the official summary of the overall series from the Dynamite website:
“Fleeing through space to escape their dying home world, the ThunderCats were attacked en route by their mortal enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. After diverting their damaged flagship to a planet called Third Earth, the surviving ThunderCats now strive to rebuild their society in harmony with the new world’s natives. But the Mutants, determined to possess the ThunderCats’ mystical gem, the Eye of Thundera, have tracked them down – and they’ve also allied with Mumm-Ra, the devil-priest of Third Earth!
Now the ThunderCats, led by an inexperienced Lion-O, must band together as never before to protect their legacy from this combined enemy. But will they be able to withstand the onslaught of Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living, once he sets his eyes upon them?
The triple-threat talents (writers, artists, and ThunderCats superfans) of DECLAN SHALVEY and DREW MOSS join forces to bring this exciting new entry in the ThunderCats canon to life! This premier issue features 24 story pages as well as a host of the finest cover artists the galaxy has ever seen, including SHALVEY, DAVID NAKAYAMA, LUCIO PARRILLO, JAE LEE & JUNE CHUNG, and IVAN TAO!”
