Mark Ruffalo’s recent statements about the future of Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have left many fans disappointed, particularly those hoping for a solo film centered around the Green Goliath. During a sitdown interview at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Ruffalo reflected on his discussions with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige about the direction of Hulk’s character arc.

According to Ruffalo, Feige expressed a reluctance to pursue a standalone Hulk movie, instead proposing to explore Hulk’s evolution over multiple Avengers films. Ruffalo shared, “Yeah. Kevin [Feige] was like, ‘What would you like to do?’ And he said, ‘What would you do if you had a standalone Hulk movie?’ I said, ‘Well, I’d like to take him from this raging maniac to kind of this integrated character.’ And he’s like, ‘Okay. We’ll do that over the course of four movies. We’ll never give you a standalone Hulk… Don’t mean to burst your bubble, but that’s just not going to [happen]… So, we’ll do it over four movies, how does that sound?'”
This revelation dashed the hopes of many fans who had been eagerly anticipating a potential solo Hulk film, especially considering the character’s tumultuous cinematic history. The prior Hulk films, particularly 2003’s “Hulk” directed by Ang Lee and 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” directed by Louis Leterrier, were met with mixed critical reception and struggled to perform at the box office. Despite efforts to reboot the character within the MCU, a standalone Hulk film never materialized.

While Ruffalo’s comments may come as a disappointment to some fans, there’s still hope for Hulk’s future in the MCU. It was speculated that Hulk might return in “Captain America: Brave New World,” following his appearance in the Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” However, a subsequent report suggested that Ruffalo misspoke, and Hulk won’t actually be appearing in the film.
Nevertheless, Hulk’s presence in the MCU remains significant, and fans eagerly await his next appearance, whether it’s in a supporting role or another ensemble film. Despite the challenges of translating Hulk’s complex character onto the big screen, Ruffalo’s portrayal has been widely praised, offering a nuanced and layered interpretation of the iconic superhero. As the MCU continues to evolve, Hulk’s story arc is sure to remain a compelling and integral part of the larger cinematic universe.

I wish Mark Ruffalo would just move to Cuba and form his own entertainment industry, there.
