With the recently reported delay of the Nintendo Switch 2 to 2025, attention has turned to how Nintendo plans to support the Switch platform throughout 2024. According to reliable Nintendo leaker Zippo, Nintendo has over a dozen finished games ready for release on Switch this year. These unannounced titles are expected to include highly anticipated sequels and remasters to fill out the Switch’s catalog in its final year.
Headlining these releases is the long-in-development Metroid Prime 4. First teased in 2017 and rebooting development in 2019 under Retro Studios, Metroid Prime 4 could finally see release in 2024 according to Zippo. The Metroid Prime trilogy stands as some of the most acclaimed and best-selling games on past Nintendo systems. A proper sequel coming to Switch would be a major event following years of anticipation.
Additionally, Zippo claims two new mainline Pokémon titles are slated for Switch this year. With Pokémon Legends: Arceus having launched early last year, speculation is around either a follow-up adventure or a new set of remakes similar to Pokémon Let’s Go. Further details remain unknown, but any main series of Pokémon RPGs would drive strong sales.
The other Nintendo franchise highlighted is Super Mario, with Zippo alluding to multiple unannounced Mario games for Switch in 2024. Between 3D adventures, kart racers, sports spin-offs, and more, the Mario series has reliably delivered hits for each Nintendo platform. More Mario games would certainly help Switch go out on a high note.
These major sequels will reportedly be joined by several Nintendo classics receiving remastered re-releases. While these remakes aren’t specified, even games like Super Mario Galaxy or The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD would attract fan interest in the Switch’s final year.
One freshly announced remaster is Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, which revitalizes the cult classic Epic Mickey games from 2010 and 2012. This updated release promises upgraded visuals and improved Mickey Mouse abilities for his adventure through a Disney-inspired wasteland. As an early Wii exclusive, the unique Epic Mickey games never found the widest audience; Rebrushed could let Switch owners fully enjoy this creative platformer.
Jeff Grubb mentioned in a Giant Bomb stream that he was much more confident about Metroid Prime 4 releasing this year now because he had heard about Epic Mickey Rebrushed from the same source. “Mike, I will say that this being confirmed gives me more confidence that we’ll get Metroid Prime 4 this year. I got the rumor from the same place”.
Between long-awaited sequels and upgraded re-releases of Nintendo classics, 2024 is shaping up to be a packed final year for the Switch platform. Nintendo still hasn’t commented on these rumors, but with Metroid Prime 4, new Pokémon RPGs, multiple Mario games, and various remasters said to be on the way, Switch owners will have plenty to enjoy as the console generation winds down. The reported delay of the Switch 2 may be disappointing, but more details on these exciting Switch software releases could soften the blow.
