The much maligned remake of “Knights of the Old Republic” (KotOR) might be showing new signs of life after years of uncertainty. Developer Saber Interactive, who began work on the KotOR Remake in 2021, has become a private company again after private investors negotiated a $500M buyout from their parent company, Embracer Group. This move has reportedly signaled the green light for the KotOR Remake to continue development after many had given up hope on this game ever getting finished.

Saber Interactive was originally founded in 2001 and was more recently acquired by Embracer Group in 2020. Embracer Group, which is a Swedish video game and media holding company based in Karlstad, Sweden, might be best known for their $400M acquisition of Middle-Earth Enterprises last year, which gave them the rights to use characters and stories from The Lord of the Rings universe.
KotOR was originally released in 2003 and has been widely regarded as one of the greatest Star Wars games ever made. While KotOR was originally developed by BioWare, the privilege of remaking this classic game was tasked to Sabre Interactive in 2021. The excitement surrounding this announcement was short-lived, as it was later revealed in July 2022 that the game was being “indefinitely delayed.”
There were previous signs of strife, such as when it was announced that controversial left-wing activist and smasher of the patriarchy Sam Maggs was being brought on as part of the Narrative Development team for the KotOR Remake. This news was not received happily by the Star Wars community after Twitter/X user @dataracer117 revealed that Ms Maggs had a long history of bashing men and Star Wars fans alike.
Within 9 months of her joining the development team, she announced that she had moved on to (presumably wreck) another beloved franchise over at Wizards of the Coast. This move should surprise no one, as Wizards of the Coast has been accused of being a woke hellscape for several years now, most notably with their decision to remove certain “harmful” tropes and stereotypes from their games.
No official release date has been announced by Saber Interactive, but there is a renewed hope that this remake will someday see the light of day. The fact that this game was assigned to Saber Interactive and not BioWare could also be a very big blessing in disguise. While millions of people fondly remember what BioWare once was, most are not yet aware of the knowledge that BioWare is owned by Electronic Arts, a massive client of Sweet Baby Inc.
Sweet Baby Inc. is the proverbial fly in the ointment for the video game industry, injecting woke identity politics wherever they can in an attempt to lecture or merely insult an entire fanbase. Saber Interactive would be best to avoid this recent public relations disaster and hire people who put the customers and the fans ahead of their own ideology. Let’s hope for our sake, and theirs, that they’ve been paying attention.

I’m sure they’ll find a way to make it into Woke garbage, alienating what few customers are still interested in this reboot, whereas they could simply move the original game’s graphics to 4k, replace the quasi-turn-based fighting system with a more organic one, and maybe diversify the sound effects (hearing the guy I’m beating up scream out the same yelling sound effect over and over again is pretty annoying) and you’d have a crowd-pleaser, but instead they’ll likely down massive amounts of money updating it for “modern audiences” that aren’t interested in THE MESSAGE anyway.
