I’ve been reading the current run of Daredevil by Saladin Ahmed and have been pleasantly surprised at how good it is–and how based it is at the same time.
As much as Frank Miller gets a lot of credit for Daredevil, the book really changed with Brian Michael Bendis’ run. What’s great is how much of this series has now been collected via Marvel Epic Collections and the BMB Daredevil Omnibus, which can be grabbed here.
I’m not usually a fan of Bendis’ writing in general, finding him too wordy and with too many pages of talking heads, but I can’t deny what he did for the Daredevil character in rebuilding the Mythos. Since his run which was then finished by Ed Brubaker, one of my favorite writers, he’s been copied by Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky to where there’s been a lot of rehash of the stories he set out to begin with.
The tone is pretty dark in these but the character of Matt Murdock goes through some really great developments which turned Daredevil from one of those side C-Lister Marvel characters to a must-read work to this day.
I find the writing pretty inspirational and the art is also second to none with Alex Maleev’s impressionistic realism adding another layer to how wonderful this series is.
I read these all in single issues the first time but have reread them last year going through all of Daredevil after this as a result (at least what’s been published in collected edition). Right now with the epic collections it’s getting close to a full complete run, something very few characters have.
