Last year, a massive leak at Insomniac Games gave fans a sneak peek at the studio’s upcoming and canceled Marvel projects. Now, a new trailer for the scrapped Spider-Man: The Great Web has surfaced online, unveiling the ambitious multiplayer spin-off Insomniac had planned.
The leaked Insomniac footage reveals a diverse roster of playable characters, including Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Gwen, Silk, Ben Reilly, and Miles Morales. Each hero boasts multiple costume designs, adding a layer of customization to the experience. Fans even catch a glimpse of a confrontation with the fearsome Venom, though it remains unclear whether this encounter was a boss fight or if the symbiote anti-hero was a potential team member.
While the trailer is a conceptual piece rather than a polished final product, the combination of cinematic sequences and gameplay footage provides a tantalizing glimpse into the scrapped Insomniac Games project.
The reasons behind the cancellation of Spider-Man: The Great Web remain unknown, but speculation suggests Insomniac may have shifted focus to the highly anticipated Spider-Man 2, along with its accompanying DLC, a rumored Venom spin-off, and the eventual two-part Spider-Man 3.
The revelation of a playable build featuring characters like Spider-Gwen and Silk has left fans yearning for the opportunity to experience this Marvel multiverse team-up firsthand. While Silk is expected to make an appearance in a future installment of the main Spider-Man series, the chances of seeing Spider-Gwen in action seem slim.
Insomniac Games’ narrative director, Ben Arfmann, previously discussed plans for Silk, stating, “Cindy’s always been a really compelling character in the comics who, similar to [Spider-Man’s] Martin Li, hasn’t really gotten a ton of exposure outside of the immediate fanbase. There’s something really exciting about taking a character who we love, who not everybody’s had a chance to meet, and exposing her to a wider audience.”

Despite Insomniac’s cancellation of Spider-Man: The Great Web, the newly leaked concept trailer has reignited excitement among fans, offering a glimpse into the gameplay and storytelling Insomniac Games had envisioned for the multiplayer Marvel adventure.
The leaked Spider-Man: The Great Web trailer not only showcases Spider-Gwen and her fellow Marvel wall-crawlers in action but also hints at a compelling narrative. The Spider-Verse has been torn open, and this group of five heroes stands as the last line of defense against the Sinister Six’s plans to conquer every reality.
The Insomniac trailer goes: “New York City. Nothing in the whole world I wouldn’t do for this big, beautiful apple. One moment, you’re scarfing down a slice from Vinnie’s; the next – you’re stopping a supervillain prison break. Sometimes, you can swing it as a lone wolf, but you’re way better off with some friends. I’ve seen the Sinister Six before…but never so methodical – so savage. I don’t think I’m going to be enough this time, guys. But together, we just might be.”
Fans were treated to glimpses of suit customization options and the ability to chain together attacks, adding depth to the gameplay experience. Perhaps most intriguing is the voiceover from Peter Parker, suggesting his character may have met an untimely demise in this particular storyline. Rumors also circulate that the Scarlet Witch could have been responsible for opening the tears in reality, sparking speculation about a potential tie-in with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While addressing the possibility of including Spider-Gwen in Spider-Man 2, Insomniac narrative director Jan Paquette stated, “You know what, we entertain [the idea of] all the characters all the time. All of us at the studio are fans of Marvel.”
“And so, one of the great things about Insomniac is that we love to get ideas from everybody on the team, so we’re always getting ideas. But we also need to stay focused on what is the story that we’re trying to tell, and Gwen isn’t part of the story that we’re trying to tell, unfortunately. But, who knows?”
